Rome to Piedmont?

I'm trying to plan a trip to Italy for the end of next March. Neither my boyfriend nor I have been to Italy and while we'd like to see Rome for a couple days, also would like get off the beaten path. Is it possible/sane to try to do Rome and Piedmont in a 7 day vacation? Any other comments/advice apreciated.

It's an unusual combination, and ANY thing CAN be done in 7 days. The Piedmont doesn't readily connect to any significant airport to get you home (assuming that "home" means back to the US) - - although there are flights from Torino to a number of other european gateways. My knowledge of the Piedmont is limited to driving from Ventimiglia up other the Col di Larche into the French Queyras. It is wonderfully and beautiful rugged. It's even conceivable that you might find (a bit of) wintry weather there in late March (more likely rain, probably not any snow).

To stay in more moderate weather, might I suggest the Rieti area as a great taste of "off the beaten path"? Just 60-90 minutes, earth-north east of Rome - - and what I imagine Tuscany was like 40 years ago before it was "discovered" - - and without, of course, Florence and Siena!

Feel free to write to me for some neat lodging suggestions, including at least two "villa" options for two people - - that do NOT require a week's stay.

Best wishes,

Rex

Thanks, Rex.

Much needed guidance! I'll look into Rieti, suggestions for unique lodgings would be great!

Kim,

My two suggestions for lodging in Rieti area are both on www.domani-usa.com under "Rome countryside" - - the first is Villa Vallerosa - - with a two day minimum at www.domani-usa.com/rome/vallerosa.html and the second is no longer listed there (the "castle" at Orvinio). There are two newer listings there now, which I do not know personally.

My e-mail box is apparently cluttered with some kind pf problem that takes it badly over capacity, but write to me directly in a few days, and I will have that solved.

Best wishes,

Rex
