Rome to Paris

I am planning to visit Italy next Spring. I will be staying close to Rome and would like to visit Paris while I am in Europe. How long does it take to travel by train from Rome to Paris, and is it even feasible to do such a thing when I will be in Italy for a total of 7-10 days?

I wonder if you have a reason to use the train? We flew on Easyjet from Rome Ciampino to Paris Orly. It was easy getting into Paris on the RER. We took a bus from Termini in Rome to Ciampino, however there are other ways to get there.

Train travel between Rome and Paris takes between 15 and 18 hours, depending on the train you get (some take longer, but most range in the above timeframe). I'd suggest you book a train that departs in the evening (maybe right after an early dinner), so you arrive in Paris in the early afternoon -- how well do you sleep on trains? You might also want to keep in mind that, while trains from Rome depart from the Termini station, there are several stations in Paris that you might arrive in or depart from.

If you want to take the train, your best choice is the direct night train that leaves Rome at 18:36 and arrives in Paris at 09:10. It will save you the cost of a night in a hotel and give you more daylight hours for sightseeing.

If you want to fly on a budget airline, another choice besides the easyJet route given by opaldog is Rome Fiumicino-Paris CDG on Vueling.

The cheapest sleeping accommodation on the night train is a bunk in a six-person couchette. Paying a little more for a bunk in a four-person couchette is well worth it for the extra space and comfort. There are also three-, two-, and one-bed sleepers; but they can be fairly expensive. To see the fares, do a dummy booking at www.trenitalia.com/en/index.html. Enter a date within 60 days of today to get accurate timetables. Flexi fares will be the most expensive. Look for discount Go and Smart fares.
