Rome to Orvieto and other day tips

Hello,
What is the best/easy/inexpensive way to go from Rome to Orvieto. We will have a few days around March 11, and it is a party of 2 adults. Also, is orvieto worth while or are there better options from Rome at about the same distance? Thanks in advance

Orvieto is a lovely town and worthy of a visit.

The Duomo is absolutely beautiful, and there are also charming shops and nice restaurants.

From Rome, the train takes about one hour. However, if you drive, you are very near Tuscany, and can spend a couple of delightful days in the area of Montalcino, San Quirico, Pienza, etc.

Orvieto is very easily visited by train, which would probably be the least expensive method. There are faster and slower trains--the slower ones are less expensive but can add considerably to the time the trip takes.

Once you arrive in Orvieto, cross the street to the funicular (incline railway) that goes directly up the hill to the old town. There are two bus routes--take the bus that goes to the duomo. It stops directly opposite the tourist info center, where you can get a map, and purchase a combined ticket for many of the popular sights at a discount (the underground tour, a few museums, the chapel in the duomo, access to a tower for a great view, and more). This ticket also offers restaurant discounts.

It is a lovely town with beautiful views over the rolling hills. Also lots of pottery shopping on the main street.

And for lunch: I Sette Consoli. Fantastic.

If you don't want to spring for I Setti Consoli, which might be a little bit pricey, I recommend a lunch at Trattoria dell Orso. Not what I would call inexpensive, however.

Hi em,

Your ticket on the funiculare includes a bus into town.

Lunch at the garden of I Sette Consoli is worth the trip - about 40E.
