Traveling from Rome to Orvieto Train or rent car & drive?
just going for day trip or might decide to stay the night.
if train do I have to purchase ticket before i leave us or can i purchase ticket day of travel?
if renting car... is it easy to rent car in Rome?

train. you can buy tickets at the train station the day of travel. Be sure to validate the tickets in the yellow machines BEFORE your board the train.

Faster IC trains cost 13€, depart roughly every 2hrs, and take 64min.

Slower regional trains cost 7.10€, also depart roughly every 2hrs, and take 78min - not much time difference.

Hi rml, I've decided to visit Orvieto this time and found the following info on another travel site. Sorry, I can't give credit to the author cause I don't remember who it was.

buy tickets for the next available train. Choose a more expensive but faster IC train or the less expensive train, the local… 2nd class tickets are 7 Euro. An hour later the train arrives Orvieto station. Cross the street to the funicular that climbs up to the hill town. Note that the price of the funicular ticket includes a bus ride to the Duomo. The famous well is nearby the funicular station, to the right and down a short walk as you exit the station.

According to www.Trenitalia.it the earliest train going Orvieto's direction is 5:57 AM and the last train back to Rome is 9:05 PM. That's from July's timetables. I don't know though how much the schedule changes from month to month etc. I'm sure someone else can help us with that information.

I recall two prices to access Orvieto when I was there last fall. One was funicular (about .70€) and the other was funicular + bus (about .90€).

Great information...thanks for posting. I'll be in Rome in October and wanted to do a day trip to Orievto...looks really easy to do.

Yes the train is very easy to Orvieto, dont miss the underground.
