Rome to Nice

How long does it take to travel by train from Rome to Nice? How expensive by train? by plane?

I can't remember the particulars, but I think it took me about 12 hours to travel to Rome from Nice by train. The train ride was quite pleasant but factor in a day of travel if you plan on using this route. If you can afford it and are short on time, I would say the plane would be more convenient.

Also, I bought my ticket at the train station in Nice the day before my departure and it took me about 2 hours to stand in line to get it. Of course there are ticket machines everywhere but they are in French and for some reason wouldn't give me the seat I was looking for, while I got it when I purchased it in person from the counter.

Nine hours and 35 minutes, overnight (even though this would not be my choice), departing 23:15 arriving 9:50 am.

Or consider these solutions which would save some time, for not much more money:

Rome-Brussels-Nice on virgin-express.com for 91-101 euro, departing 10:00, arriving 14:50, for example.

Even cheaper still is Rome (Ciampino) to London (Stansted) on Ryanair.com - - dep 14:50, arr 16:30 - - then connect to Easyjet.com departing Stansted 17:40, arriving Nice 20:50 - - total 32.56 + 42.05 euro

Perhaps preferable for those who don't want 13 hours (day) on the train - - or who do not relish the idea of sleeping on a train.

Best wishes,

Rex
[email protected]
I wish to apologize for not thanking you all for your advice. There is a fair chance that we will stop for a couple of days at Florence en route. If not, then we will probably take your wise advice and fly.

If you're going to stop in Florence on the way then rail would be better than air I suspect. Air is great for speed unless you want to see things along the way. Rome to Florence is 2 hrs 29 minutes via Eurostar.
