Rome to Naples via Train

A quick qeustion for anyone who has flown into Rome recently. How mcuh time should I allow to clear customs and get to Roma Termini? I am finding that many of the Eurostar trains to Naples are already sold out for the time I'd desire (early afternoon). Does it make sense that they are already sold out for early May? Thanks everyone.

Are you sure they are sold out or are they not yet available for purchase?

You can only purchase 60 days ahead.

At a rough guess, I'd give an hour to collect luggage and clear passport control (for customs you simply go through the green lane), 10 minutes to get to the Fiumicino train station, then x minutes to wait for the Leonardo Express (it leaves at :05 and :35), 32 minutes to get to Termini, 15 to 20 minutes to get from the track where the Leonardo Express comes in to the front of the platforms where all the other trains depart.

I find it hard to believe that trains are already sold out. From Roma to Napoli, there are a couple of trains every hour. Even the hourly stopping trains are scheduled to do the journey in under three hours, so there's no point in waiting long for a Eurostar train. There are no seat reservations for these trains. If you just buy a ticket at the station, you can hope that you can get seats on an Intercity or Eurostar, and otherwise get a slow train.

Hi J,

You can purchase tickets as early as 60 days in advance.

The 12:45 ES* to Napoli on May 11 has available tickets.

I suggest that, if you have checked luggage, you allow 3 hr to make your train. Otherwise 2:30 hr.

We will be taking the train from Rome to Naples on March 28th. I had intended to just wait until we got there and decide at the last minute when to go rather than making a reservation ahead of time. Will we be OK if we don't get tickets until that day or the day or two before? If I am understanding the advice given, we should be OK (especially if we don't mind taking one of the slower trains that stops more). We had figured that it was not a high travel time so getting on a train last minute shouldn't be an issue. Was I wrong?

jcasale, from my experiences you should be fine. We've traveled to Italy in March twice now, and have never had a problem getting on the trains we wanted. Most were only half full, if that. If you make the purchase the day of you shouldn't have any problems.
