Rome to Naples Train
Dear Fordors
I know this is probably a silly question but I don't seem to be able to get a train timetable from the Trenitalia site. I am trying to get the timetable for Rome to Naples Trains and can only come up with a time of 8.16 a.m. I am sure there must be more trains per day than that! Grazie |
Hi
Works OK for me (I used some dummy dates). What date are you going? What time do you prefer? |
There are generally a couple of trains every hour between Roma and Napoli, including the cheap stopping trains that take nearly three hours. If you're having problems with Trenitalia's web site, you can see the schedule on www.bahn.de.

Thanks for the reply. We are staying in the Crowne Plaza Hotel in Rome for the last day of a tour which finishes after breakfast on September 13, 2007. I was thinking that we would be able to catch a train at say 10.30 but when I put this time in the Trenitalia time table it still gives me 8.16 a.m. which will be too early.
I was hoping to get to Naples and then catch a train to Sorento to our next hotel and still have time to either go to Pompeii or Capri for the afternoon. Do you think that is too much in one day. (Maybe I should plan on the 8.16 train)!!! P |
Hi P,
Try entering a date within the next 60 days. There are 4 trains between 10 and 11:00. ((I)) |
Thanks IRA you are always such a good help.

Ira,
I forgot to ask - what you think of the rest of the plan for the day. Will we fit it in. We are staying at a B&B 5 mins from the main square. We have only two nights there so that really only equates to 1 1/2 days before we have to leave for Lecce. P P |
Hi Patricia - If you leave as late as 10.30 your best plan would be to get off at Pompeii Scavi and visit Pompeii en route to Sorrento.
There is a left luggage store at the entrance ... Otherwise you will waste time unecessarily backtracking and your visit to Pompeii will be rushed before closing time - unless you leave Rome early. Hope this helps ... Steve |
Help all! I am planning three nights in Rome. My question is, should I spend only two and a night in Sorrento to visit Pompeii or should I do a day trip from Rome? After Rome or Sorrento we'll travel by train to Florence.

If you search on "Pompeii Daytrip" you will find this discussed quite often.
My personal view is that Pompeii is a wonderful site, but to fully appreciate it, you should also see the national archaeological museum in Naples (Where they display many of the artifacts from Pompeii and Herculaneum). For that, it would be better to stay in the area - Sorrento makes a good base. |
Hi P,
>I was hoping to get to Naples and then catch a train to Sorrento to our next hotel and still have time to either go to Pompeii or Capri for the afternoon.< Highly unlikely. As SJ, suggests, get off at Pompei Scavi on your way to Sorrento. Also, slow down. You will be in Italy, land of il dolce far niente. Enjoy your visit. ((I)) |
Thanks everyone, Steve and Ira,
I have taken your advice and will slow down, I have managed to book an extra night in Sorrento and I must admit I feel much happier about that. Thanks again. P |
You are welcome, P
