Rome to Florence: train or plane
 

I am flying non stop to rome, however, my first stop will be Florence. If I arrive from the US in the morning, which is easier, most efficient- train or plane. Which would you choose.., Where does the train leave from?

By train is three hours; the trains are clean. I suppose that you can take the train from airport, but I am not sure. I took it from Rome - Statione Centrale.

There is an airport in Florence (Peretola). Depending on who you are flying on, there are connections to Peretola from Rome. The train is a good option if it is too late to make flight changes. I suggest taking a taxi to the central train station. I just think it is easier than the bus/train. Some travellers here have taken a train from the airport to the main train station. I understand it is quite a bit of walking from where the airport train leaves you and the central train station however.

If you are already AT the airport, then flying will save you time, even though the train is only 95 minutes. But it may cost you a lot more.

I meant to say flying COULD save you time... not flying WILL save you time. It all depends on arrival and departure times.

My husband and I flew into FCO in November, took the airport train into Rome and got on the train to Florence. It was very easy, and a relaxing way to do it.

Plane (Alitalia) is about $240. Takes an hr. FLR is about 15 min out of the city.

If you take the train to Rome (0:30 hr) and the train to Florence (1:36 hr) cost is 55E in 1cl.

Whether you save time depends on the scheduling.

BBK, next month I am flying into Rome (FCO) in the morning and taking the train (Leonardo Express) into Rome's Termini Station (cost around 9 Euro/30 minute ride) and therein taking the Eurostar into Florence (appx 30 Euro/90 min)

It's a beautiful and relaxing train ride - the scenery is so lovely and the cost is not relatively affordable.

Just a suggestion - an option to flying.
