Rome to Florence

I read an earlier post about the best way to get to Florence, and everyone was recommending flying directly to Florence. That sounds great, but when I looked into the pricing, it will cost about $500 plus to fly from any of the major connecting cities to Florence. DOES ANYONE HAVE ANY EXPERIENCE WITH TAKING THE TRAIN FROM THE ROME AIRPORT TO THE ROME TERIMI TRAIN STATION AND THEN TO FLORENCE?? I have gotten the price and the times, but what about the hassel? I know we can get tickets for Rome to Florence on line; however, what about tickets from the Rome airport to Terimi? Any other suggestions?

hi susan, I haven't been there yet, but i am confident that normal everyday humans with a little common sense and average intelligence CAN navigate the train system. ricksteves.com has some great tips; italy's main train stations are on line at fs-on-lin.com - you want to go from: Roma Termini to Firenze Campo di Marte -looks like it should cost about $40 or less (1st class) and take a little over 2 hours. How much hassle could it possibly be? use the plane ride over to prepare your questions from your handy dandy italian phrase book....that's what I'm going to do!
let us all know how you make out!
amy

Susan

When you land, you can find your way to the station in the airport. There's a ticket office there where you can buy your ticket through to Florence. There are many trains each day, so it's not necessary to buy your ticket in advance. You will have to change trains at Termini, which was not really a hassle.

Hi Susan...not sure about from rome airport to termini...but we went from Termini Train station directly to Florence....no problem and we were first time travelers out of the states!Station in Florence was walking distance to our hotel...florence is not that big! Good luck and enjoy...we met the nicest people traveling on the train

Susan, I did this a couple of years ago. Flew into Rome then caught a train from airport to Termini where we got the train to Florence. It's not difficult to do at all and is much more economical than flying. Have fun

Agree with everyone above. Train is easy. However, if you're smart, you will purchase your tickets in Italy and save a little more money. It is cheaper than buying on line.
