Rome to Fiumicino Airport via Ostia Antica

Our trip in Sep/Oct this year ends in Rome, and we will be flying home from FCO airport. As it's an early evening departure, I had a notion to visit Ostia Antica on that last day, and continue on to the airport from there. However, everything I'm reading tells me that, although getting from Rome to Ostia Antica is easy enough, continuing on later from Ostia Antica to FCO airport may be considerably more difficult. Public transport seems to be indirect and time-consuming, and taxis could be hard to find in Ostia. Does anyone have any advice on this, or would we better to do Ostia Antica on another day when it's a simple return trip from and back to Rome? Thanks for any useful tips...

My first thought is what would you do with your luggage. I don't recall seeing anyplace to leave your things. I think visiting another day would be the simplest idea. Simple is usually best, in my experience.

Another thought, check out of your hotel and leave your bags there. It's a short trip back and sounds like you have time that day to do it.

Yes MmePerdu, good thinking. Thanks for that. Another thought: is Ostia Antica open all days? I think I read somewhere that it might be closed on Mondays, but maybe that information was out of date.

It looks like that's correct, closed Mondays. Here's a site for visitors:

Always good to check again once you're in Rome.

Check your bags into luggage store at the Airport, then you either catch the bus to the Lido di Ostia and the train out to Ostia Antico (which will take at least an hour) or do the obvious and catch a taxi, while it is an airport pick up the distance is only 4km or so.

You could walk it or take a bike (there is a bike hire shop somewhere near the airport.
