Rome to Capri day trip?
Has anyone taken a day trip from Rome to Capri? I know it will not do the are justice, but is it worth the approximate $180 per person?
Thanks, Karineh |

It's possible but you would spend all day travelling - If I remember Rome to Naples by train is about 2 hours then the ferry to Capri (about 1 hour). Then back again!

Both my sons and there wives have been there. One couple stayed on the isle for a week and can't wait to go back the other couple took a ferry over from Positano and felt the day trip just doesn't do it justice. It turned out the water was choppy and they couldn't do the Blue Grotto and felt very rushed even though they only came from the Amalfi coast --along with throngs of other day trippers.

I actually did this as a day trip about 6 years ago with my husband and daughter (then 10). We took the bus tour from Rome, saw a smidgen of Naples, and then took the ferry over to Capri. It was a gorgeous day and we went to the Blue Grotto (fabulous, except quite a few people got sea sick waiting to get into the smaller boats to go inside the grotto- that was kind of gross)-but we loved the Blue Grotto. Then we had lunch on Ana Capri, walked around, shopped for a short while (bought perfume at Carthusia), then returned to Sorrento before heading back to Rome. It was a very "touristy" day but since we didn't really have time to do the Amalfi Coast it was a great way to get a taste of the south and a fun day. Now as for the money...back then it was probably cheaper because it was in the day of the lire. Capri is gorgeous and worth seeing - it depends how much money you have for your trip and if you think you'll be getting back anytime soon.

What month are planning your trip and what is included in that price? Does this price include the blue grotto or any sites? Our family spent 4 nights of a 3-week trip in Sorrento in July 2006 and took a daytrip (hydrafoil--very fast) to Capri and the Blue grotto. We enjoyed Capri and the Blue grotto is beautiful but certainly a rip off $-wise although you must see it if you are on Capri. The blue grotto can be closed without warning if the water is very choppy.

Dont do it. You'll get an hour in Capri, which is always mobbed and not really worth the effort. Then you'll get back to where you're staying and wonder why the hell you did it. Waste of a day, waste of money.

Hi Karineh - Why pay $180?? You can do it independantly for about € 80 per person.
With an early start you can be in Naples in time to catch the 09.30 hydrofoil - and be in Capri by 10.30. If you catch the 17.30 or 18.35 return hydrofoil to Naples this will allow you 7 hours+ in Capri, returning to Rome mid to late evening. Of course it's along day - but well worth it if it's your only chance to visit. Hope this helps ... Steve P.S. Trenitalia are currently offering DuexUno (2 for the price of 1) on AV Rome-Naples trains. |
Steve, you mentioned the two for one for Rome to Naples AV train--I have been checking the Trenitalia site and have not been able to find that rate. Can you help me locate where you found it? We are two seniors traveling with our grandson and would like to find that fare from Rome to Naples (and back). Also, can you book a return trip on Trenitalia? That did not seem clear either. Thanks for any advice you can offer!

Hi HAR - Next to 'Fare' click 'Choose your rate'.
Choose 'DUEperUNO' and it will give you a rate of € 33 for 2 (- normally € 33 pp.) each way. Hope this helps ... Steve |
thank you all for your help. We are going in mid-May. We will be in Rome for 5 days and this trip is still jsut a thought. We don't have time to stay down in the area, so we were thinking that this might be a way to get a taste. Can someone tell me how we would get to the Ferry from Naples? As you can see, I am geographically challenged when it comes to Italy!
Thanks again! |
Hi - By public transport there are 2 options:
- Tram No.1 ... or - Bus No.3S - from Piazza Garibaldi (- far side of piazza from station exit). Buy your tickets before boarding ... and VALIDATE on boarding. Otherwise you can take a taxi. N.B. Fix the price before you get in. Hope this helps ... Steve |
