Rome to Capri
Hi Folks !!!
I m coming to Italy in Dec. Will spend 4 nights in Rome, 4 nights in Florence and 3 nights in Venice. Can someone suggest that should I go to Capri or Anacapri for day trip? Is it possible to take day trip from Rome? Any better suggestion. Cheers!!! |
You'd be doing quite a lot of travel, at a time of year when there's only about 9 hours of daylight - but that outing is far from impossible!
The fast trains get down to Naples in just 70 minutes - with slower but cheaper alternatives. Probably there will be some timetable changes by then but, for an idea, see.... http://www.pbase.com/isolaverde/image/132196214 It's then about 15 minutes by taxi to the port, with a sea crossing of maybe 45 minutes. Current details here: http://www.capri.net/en/ferry-schedule?path_id=11 For a look at what December can be like in the area, these are all from various recent winters, and were mostly taken on Ischia - which is some 20/25 miles away.... http://www.pbase.com/isolaverde/ischiawinter But only you can tell if the trip is worth the day it will take? Otherwise, the nearby ruins of Roman Pompei are a very popular visit... http://www.pbase.com/isolaverde/slides_pompeii Much handier for central Rome, however, are the remains of Ostia Antica... http://www.pbase.com/isolaverde/ostia_bracc The trip there should take only an hour or so, and the entire visit perhaps only half a day... leaving you time to see more of Rome's other attractions? http://www.pbase.com/isolaverde/lazio Peter |

long slog... overnite or more better or skip it Capri WAY too touristy anyway www.ostia-antica.org better cheaper 1 euro on the metro eurocheapo.com/rome great city tips |
I wouldn't be inclined to travel all the way to Capri at that time of year when it won't be seen at its most beautiful. Instead, if you want a day trip, I would follow the suggestion above to visit Ostia Antica or perhaps Tivoli.

I love Capri and it's easy to get away from the summer's tourist crowds, but a) I would not do it as a day trip from Rome, even in the summer, b) it's much nicer if you stay a few days rather than visiting it as a day trip and c) IMO there's no point at all in seeing it in the middle of winter. There is more than enough to see in the 3 cities you are visiting to fill the fairly short amounts of time you have in each.
