Rome Subway
 

Bebore joiing friends for a trip through Puglia, my DH and I are staying two days in Rome. We thought we would take the train from the airport (we are arriving from France) and then the subway to the Cavour station. We have some luggage and my DH is not crazzy about stairs. Does anybody know if this station has an escalator? We have been several times in Rome but am ashamed to confess to never having used this transportation. Thanks for your help.

FrUS, I have never used the subway in Rome either. Why don't you think about taking a taxi from the train station to whereever you are going. Anyway, with luggage that is what I would do. Best regards.

I do not remember seeing an escalator at the Cavour station. There were lots of steps though!

I agree with LoveItaly, why not just take a taxi? Ask your hotel how much the fare should cost, they will know. Verify that with your driver BEFORE you or your luggage, get in!

We were in Rome just the past week, and we have used the Metro many time, but its not worth the hassle when u have luggage, a taxi is worth the extra €'s

When in Rome my husband and I could barely fit ourselves on the train it was so busy. Luggage would be a problem. Taxi is your best option.

I believe the only stations on the B line without escalators are Colosseo, Circo Massimo and Cavour. I agree, take a taxi.

I'm thinking the train is around 13 euro per person. Perhaps the taxi would be another 10? For two of you that's 36 euro.

For 35 euro you can be met at the airport by a driver who will take you in a nice airconditioned private car to your hotel. It seems a much better option to me, than the "schlepp" to the trains at FCO plus the transfer at Termini.

By the way, I did enjoy riding the subway in both Rome and Naples. I was on a day trip to Tivoli from Rome, so no luggage and yes the train was pretty full. In Naples, on a Saturday, no crowds and I just took my roller on with me no problem.

So call me crazy but here is what I would do:

At FCO airport, instead of taking the "express" train to Termini, I would take the suburban train from that station to Ostiense -- faster and not crowded, in my experience.

At Ostiense station, walk through the connecting passages to Pyramide station on the subway line B.

Take the subway a few stops to Cavour.

As simple as taking a taxi?

Well, it is to me. And so much more atmospheric and "local" feeling.....

In February we did exactly what Tedgale suggested--it was easy, not crowded and cheap. The suburban train is 5 euros each and the metro one. It's definitely the easier (and cheaper) option if you're getting off at Trastevere, Colosseo or Cavour.

I stayed near Cavour station last June and do not recall seeing a lift either.
I'm taking a wild guess that there would be 20 steps which lead to one street, and then another 20 steps up to via cavour. Airport express to termini, and taxi to hotel from termini would be cheap/comfortable.

The Cavour metro stop exits on Via Leonina, which runs roughly parallel to Via Cavour but roughly 20 feet below it. If your hotel is on Via Cavour you have to do some climbing, and if it's on one of the streets connecting Via Cavour to the Colosseum you have to do even more, although not on stairs. I suggest taking a taxi unless your hotel is on Via Leonina.
