Rome - St. Regis Grand or Westin Excelsior ?
 

We're using Sheraton Starwood points. Which might be best for us for two nights in August? My husband has a physical disability so we'd like to be on as level ground as possible. Also, walking to the Metro from the hotel - as convenient as possible - sometimes the closest is not the easiest.

I'm assuming that these two hotels are very centrally located.. is one better than the other?

The St. Regis Grand is more central and better located, given your requirements. It's on level ground near Termini, where there is a Metro station and a bus hub; the Westin Excelsior is uphill on Via Veneto.

Some Metro stations but not all are equipped with escalators. Consider using buses instead; many are accessible.

Actually, you may not use the metro much in Rome. It doesn't get you to that many places, like in other cities. And metro aside, I'm not sure the St. Regis is THAT much more centrally located. The problem is that they're both NOT that well located.

We also like to use our Starwood points to stay in Rome. We have always enjoyed our stays at the Excelsior. Although this summer, we're trying the Hotel Eden for the first time. These two hotels are at least closer to the Spanish Steps area and the Borghese Gardens. I also read on Marco's thread that the area around the train station and south of the St. Regis can be a bit seedy.

Zerlina's right about the busses. They are very easy to use.

Not quite on the subject, but I just returned from Rome this past week. I stayed at two hotels near the train station and did not find either area seedy. I was comfortable walking alone at night. There may be seedy areas nearby, but I didn't see them. I stayed at the Best Western Hotel Canada and the Residenza Cellini.

I enjoyed the Westin Excelsior. It is not extremely close to a Metro station, but then again, I have never used the Metro in Rome (although I do frequently in other cities). There are only 2 lines, and they are not helpful for tourists. Cabs are fairly inexpensive for a large city and much more convenient, especially if walking is an issue.
