rome sheraton?
 

I can stay here for one night - for 60.00 USD plus 4,000 starwood points.

I am flying into Rome and leaving on a train the next day for Lecce. It appears that the hotel is out of the center of town by around a 1/3 hour.

What are the thoughts on this? Would you do it?

Or just get a room by the train station?

If your plane lands late in the day you can just sit poolside or have dinner and regroup from the flight and then leave the next morning. Not bad. I wouldn't stay that far away from the Rome center for any longer (if you want to visit Rome).

We spent about 5 nights in Rome last July - this is just a pass through.

We are going to a little town outside of Lecce, then Assisi, Sienna and Venice onto Verona.

I need to decide where to stay one night between Lecce and Assisi via the train.

Last time we went to Florence and Rome.

I notice there are three Sheratons outside of Rome, which one are you considering? I would think there are nice grounds and maybe a township nearby to one of them.

Aren't you flying into Ciampino? The Sheraton is closer to Fiumicino than Ciampino.

That is the one. It is 4,000 points and 60 USD that is the only reason I am considering using it.

Yes, I am flying into Ciampino from Baden Baden on 10-4.

I think that its the one we always pass on the way from FCO into the city on the way to our layovers-some bedrooms are a stone's throw from the exit ramp.You have to take a prescribed shuttle to and from central Rome with a dropoff/pickup at a tea bar several blocks from the historic area.Traffic is always a pain to and from downtown Rome so save yourself stress and enjoy Rome for the evening.
Personally, I would save the points and stay by Termini-there are some great hotels in the area and no safety issues. Rick Steves has a bunch in his book on Rome-Hotel Aberdeen is my favorite on Via Torino.Check it out on Tripadvisor.

It's not in a central area and near a highway. And the area around it isn't interesting. We passed it on the way to and from FCO. I think it'll be too much time wasted to commute to and from the center although I read they provide a shuttle.

We are only staying one night. I am going to look into the recommendations from Dutyfree. I have R.S. books and believe I checked into a few he recommended. The area around the Termi makes me a little nervous - should it?

Now knowing that you are planning on going to termini the next morning, I too suggest staying near there. I was thinking you were driving away the next day and wouldn't need to go into Rome.

The area isn't bad, I walked around there looking for the Enjoy Rome offices, in the daytime. Not all the area around there is seedy.

I remember your saying in another post your daughter really liked Rome. I agree with others it would make more sense to stay in the city and re-visit some of the areas she liked (Piazza Navonna/della Rotunda?).

There are lots of threads about hotels near the Termini station

MomDDTravel: I stayed in that hotel, using the same deal, and would think about doing so again. I found it to be very good and appreciated the shuttle service from the airport. There´s also a shuttle service from the hotel to the train station.

On the down side, it´s in a business district, so I didn´t find any restaurant close to the hotel which I liked. But you can sit outside of the hotel quite well and have some dinner and drinks there.

Using the shuttle to the city centre wasn´t that inconvenient either since it´s running frequently and drops you off close to the centre. Still it´s obviously nicer not to have to care for a shuttle and just being able to walk.

From my point of view, the plus of the Sheraton is the quality of the hotel for that (low) price plus convenience in regard to the airport shuttle. The minus is some inconvenience with the shuttle if you want to have dinner in Rome centre and have little time.

we also stayed in a sheraton outside rome. it was just fine.
we had no problem coinciding with the shuttle to go in and out, and one night we just took a taxi back to the hotel when we wanted.

of course we did this because the rate was so fabulous including breakfast and tax, we couldn´t pass it up. we also had a car, and the free parking was great.

MOMDDtravel-I think that you will love the Aberdeen and the area. I stay on my airline layovers at a 4 star up by the Via Veneto and I personally think that the Aberdeen and staff is wayyyy better.It is so convenient and very safe. Have fun!

Thanks Dutyfree - they have been very kind in emails and have assisted me in arranging for car service to pick us up as well.

WHICH of the Starwood properties are you referring to? We LOVE ALL of them but need to know of which you speak to answer the question!

I have opted to not use the points. I will be using them later in the trip in London I believe.

As wonderful and convenient as the Sheraton Roma is, it is better utilized for extended stays. The shuttle has only one drop-off and pick-up location and it is not convenient to the Termini. My recommendation is save the time and travel and stay in Rome. The Best Western Art Deco is a good alternative. ENJOY!

Also you are replicating some of our travels, if you have more ?'s just ask.
