Rome: San Carlo vs Santa Chiara

Hi
I've just gotten price quotes for next spring.
The Santa Chiara, my old favorite, is now up to 190 euro for a single.
The San Carlo, which I just learned about recently here, is 120 euro for a single--it would be in the main building, not in the more lavish annex, and not having an elevator is moot because the room would be on the first floor.
My impression is that the Santa Chiara breakfast is more lavish ( it was great when I was there last) but breakfast isn't worth
70 euro a night to me. I have a slight preference for the Pantheon location of the Santa Chiara only because I'm more familiar with it.

Any one who knows both hotels, or who has further insight on the San Carlo--I'd appreciate your comments, including on room and bathroom amenities in the main hotel building. the annex building doesn't have singles, just 'superior doubles' at 188 euro, which would get me more space for the buck than the single at the S.Chiara which is cozy but small.

I don't need luxury per se, and I am not expecting much space, but want convenient, and un-shabby ambiance. Especially I'm on my own, I want to feel good when I come back to the hotel in the evening.

Thanks for the link, it was Bookchick's postings on a couple of thread that got me interested in the San Carlo.
It sounds great, I just wish I could find 'the same thing' for the same price, in the Pantheon area.

Hi
We stayed at at the Santa Chiara about 11/2 yrs. ago and thoroughly enjoyed its location and the hotel. Have you checked on Venere.com for hotels?

thanks, I love the Santa Chiara myself, it's just a lot more expensive this time around, vis a vis what I'd prefer to spend. I'll be on a 10 day trip, and have one particular splurge hotel in mind, so want to economize on some of the other hotels.
