sorry, I didn't mean that there was a reference above to buying carnets, but to buying individual tickets in tobacco shops.
I've done some searching on line, it seems nowadays it's either passes of various duration, or individual tickets, so cancel my mention of carnets. thanks for making me dig. http://www.rome.info/transportation/tickets/ www.atac.roma.it |
lowcountrycarol,
meant to say, sorry to hear that La Tartaruga went downhill; I guess I needn't be sorry I didn't get there this trip. Strange though that it just doesn't pop up on any websites, not even in a bad way. |

cathies, I meant to respond to your gelato comment about Florence. As I'm sure you know, Vivoli, for one place, has great gelato in Florence. But the best gelato I've ever had, leaving Vivoli in the dust, is from Della Palma, and it happens to be in Rome. :-)

here are some more Rome websites (some of which I got from postings here on Fodors)
www.romexplorer.com sightseeing, practical info, weather, hotels, restaurants, guided tours, etc www.wantedinrome.com markets, events, kids’ stuff, living in Rome www.capitolium.org The official Web site of the Imperial forums, with pictorial reconstructions of how the ruins would have looked in their day, as well as how they look now; material on life in ancient Rome; and even a live Web view of the Forum. http://www.romanhomes.com/index.htm the purpose is real estate rental, but there is some excellent sightseeing info, with photos http://www.santasusanna.org Santa Susanna is the American Catholic church in Rome, the website has links and clicks for sightseeing, the Vatican, etc. Santa Susanna has a mass in English at least once per week. www.nerone.cc tours, itineraries, and guides for Rome, also names and addresses of some tourist sites http://goitaly.about.com/od/romeital...azzanavona.htm Walking route for Piazza Navona |
hi elaine,
re the carnet [sorry to bang on about it!] i may have to eat my words - the 2010 Fodor's See It in Rome guide talks about carnets of 5 tickets for €5. I suppose that the only thing to do will be to try to buy one! and thanks again for posting such a comprehensive list. regards, ann |
Excellent report. I appreciate all the information and links. Thanks

The 5 ride ticket you are talking about is the MULTIBIT, but it's just one ticket you can use 5 times on different days. I wouldn't describe it as a carnet (sounds French) which to me means multple individual tickets. Perhaps I don't know the definition of carnet.
BIT - 1€ - single use good for 75 minutes BIG - 4€ - unlimited rides for one day only MULTIBIT - 5€ - five separate rides on one ticket - can be on different days BTI - 11€ - unlimited rides for three consecutive days Carta Settimanle - 16€ - week pass |
kybourbon - that's certainly the carnet idea.
can two or more people use them? |
I've shared before in Barcelona on the subway (T 10). You put the ticket in the turnstyle and after you go through, hand it to the person behind you. Should work the same way in the Rome metro. I'm not sure what response you would get if the police stopped you and wanted to see each person's ticket. I'm not sure how you could work it for the bus either. They are designed to be swiped/read, not stamped multiple times. I'm not sure you are "allowed" to share.
The Rome Tourist Board mentions the Multibit, but I don't see it on the ATAC Roma site which is the official transportation site. http://www.atac.roma.it/index.asp?p=19&i=14 I used the Roma Pass last trip which comes with a 3 day transport pass. There is a place to write your name on the transport pass and the date it starts which indicates you can't share. |
I am also sorry to hear about La Tartuaga, as we had our best meal of our 2007 trip to Rome there. The pastas were exquisite. We too were the only diners in the restaurant that night, but because the food was so fabulous it felt special instead of awkward.

Sorry, make that Tartaruga.

Hi Elaine, I'll be sure to check out Della Palma next year. We've tried Vivoli and I'm certainly up for a Gelato challenge!! Thanks for the tip.

Della Palma--I guess I should invest! They don't seem to have a website, but I found this online review, with a map
http://www.10best.com/Rome,Italy/Vot...la_Palma_Rome/ My mouth is watering! |
