LA MATRICIANELLA
Via del Leone 2/4
Campo Marzio
(Behind Piazza di San Lorenzo in Lucina)
39 06 683 2100
Very near Sp.Steps. Traditional Roman trattoria. We ate here our first night in Rome (2 ladies). It was a very comfortable atmosphere and the food was delicious. (get the fried artichokes!)
Near Piazza Navona:
FIAMETTA
Next to (behind) Hotel Genio, Piazza Fiametta
Lively atmosphere, lovely food, great wine.
Near Pantheon:
LA SAGRISTA
Facing the Pantheon, turn left on Via Seminaria. 5 or 6 doors up on the right. Definitely go for the pizza margherita at lunch! Dinner was good too.
(If anyone has address, phone no. for this restaurant please post it. Thanks)

La Campana is one of the few remaining old-style Roman restaurants, with all that that implies, including grumpy waiters and brusque service.
On the other hand, they do classical Roman cuisine very well and at a reasonable price.
It's best to reserve for dinner, not so necessary at lunch.

On the Piazza del Poppollo (sp?) is a fabulous restaurant called Dal Bolognese. It is facing the piazza and true to the name, has fantastic bolognese sauce (get the bolognese mixer platter with lasagna)
It is very tre chic, so call for a reservation. It appeared to filled with fashionista last time we were there.

Here is an article by Mimi Sheraton of the New York Times that mentions Al Moro and other places to eat in Rome. In addition, I always hear good things about Agate e Romeo.

Check also my tedgale trip report: Rome, Venice, Tuscany for details of La Rampa, which 60 seconds away from the foot of the Spanish steps -- i.e. on the Rampa Mignanelli.
It is a place a solo diner might find congenial, as it is bustling and unfussy.
RE Dal Bolognese: I know the address is 2, P.zza del Popolo and we tried twice to locate it but could not.

I've eaten at Macheroni and while the food was good, it's nothing really special and the service was marginal at best. Without reservations, you may be seated if you arrive no later than 7:30 and are told to vacate the table by 8:30. Da Bolognese is next to Rosati's on Piazza del Popolo. Again good, but not outstanding.

ask that question at www.prestotours.com
they gave us a good list of restaurants, that were so good it was ridiculous. just pretend you are interested in a tour or something and ask them questions. we actually toured with them and they were great, but they also set us up with sweet restaurants and great places to shop

Annie you are a new poster, having posted 10 times in the last 2 days. At least half of these posts recommend Presto Tours. What gives? I don't think anyone here needs to contact a tour operator and "pretend" to be interested in taking a tour with them to get a couple of restaurant names.
