Rome > Pienza > ?
 

Some time ago, I posted a message about our upcoming trip in May but didn't get many responses. So, I am now trying to have a more open inquiry to see if we can come up with something more interesting.

Last year, we did the AC, Tuscany (mainly southern Tuscany but also SG and Siena), Florence and Venice. We actually got married in Pienza.

This year, we would like to go back for our anniversary. So, Pienza is a must. And we think we can see Rome this time.

So far, we are thinking of Rome for 4 nights and Pienza area for 4 to 5 nights. But we are not sure exactly where to go from there. We'll have a total of 2 weeks and will have a car for the Tuscany portion.

If you were the one making this two week trip and if you are looking for some relaxation and some romance,where would you go after Pienza?

We don't have air-tickets yet, so we are very flexible.

Maxi - You can't go far wrong with a few days in Umbria IMO. Assisi, Spoleto, Spello, Perugia, Todi, Gubbio ...
Assisi is a lovely town to just relax ...

Or Liguria. Santa Margherita Ligure makes an attractive base in one of the most scenic parts of the Riviera. Or Camogli ...

I would spend some time in Umbria, and then up to Venice. Can't get any more romantic than Venice - if you are "savy" enough to know how to avoid the croweds at certain times around St Marks & Rialto Bridge.

People have suggested that it's easier to fly in to Vencie than to fly out - because most airlines have early departures from Venice & it's a little tricky to get to the airport early in the morning. Perhaps start your adventure in Venice.

To answer Ira's question: the destination(s) after Pienza can be in or out of Italy. All we do is to get air-tickets accordingly.

Try an agritourismo in Le Marche, Undiscovered territory.

Liguria, and particularly Santa Margherita Ligure, is a favorite of mine for romantic relaxing.

Lovely promenade, boat trips to Portofino and San Fruttuoso, Camogli, and more. There is a really lovely walk in Portofino , out to the lighthouse. There is also serious hiking over the Portofino promontory, if you are interested. Very good food, too. Also a nice hotel selection. This isn't an art, monuments or architecture destination. It is lovely, though, and the Abbey at San Fruttuoso is an ancient church site, if you are longing for one.

If you haven't visited Cortona you really should it's only 35-40 minutes from Pienza. Other beautiful places near Cortona are Montepulciano, Montalcino, Assisi, Spoleto, Gubbio.
Depending on the time of the year, you might want to think about accommodation with a swimming pool as it can get really warm in the summer months.

I agree with those saying Umbria. We love Assisi, Spello, Montefalco, and Bevagna. All of these are close to each other. Another lovely town to see is Norcia. A car is a must.

Another thought is the Cinque Terre area. Nothing to do there but relax, swim, hike, eat, drink, and soak in the beautiful Mediterranean seascapes. No need for a car there. Take the train.
