Rome - "Paul" sites
 

We are headed to Rome in November. I swear sometime in the past I read of a self-guided walking tour you could do that was to sites in Rome related to the apostle Paul. (kind of a protestant's pilgramage walk or something :)) I've searched on this forum and tripadvisor and am not coming up with anything (as well as a google search).

Can anyone advise about this - having either done it or seen it written about?

If a painting counts as a site, there's Caravaggio's Conversion of St. Paul in Santa Maria del Popolo.

I don't know if there is an "official" Steps of St. Paul walk but I believe I gave someone some tips on where to visit in Rome if they were interested in the apostle.
1. San Paolo Fuori le Mura. One of Rome's great basilicas, it is where the apostle is said to be buried.
2. Abbazia delle Tre Fontane. The church erected on the site of Paul's beheading. It is said that his head bounced three times and three fountains of water sprang up where his head touched.
3. San Giovanni Laterano. Paul's head is in a reliquary above the high altar.
4. Mamertine Prison. Place where both Sts. Peter and Paul were held for a time.

You may wish to look at "In the Steps of St.Paul" by H.V. Morton, a very well known travel writer. If you look at the book in Amazon, you can see the contents pages and index for references to Rome(there appear to be many). I have not read the book but remembered it from doing research for my trip last year. Good luck

5) Catacomb of St Callixtus - where the remains of apostles Peter and Paul were hidden during the persecutions.

If you are near via del Corso, the head of St. John the Baptist is in a church nearby. He hasn't held up well over the centuries but apparently it's really him. It's in the Church of San Silvesto in the square of the same name. Beautiful church, worth a visit even without St. John the Baptist.
