Rome or Naples: which airport safer?

Rome or Naples: which airport safer?
Are planning to fly into Milan traveling south and ending in Positano. Is Naples airport safe or would it be wiser to travel to Rome and fly home from there? I've heard so many stories about Naples, but none from someone that has actually been there!!
Any advise is greatly appreciated.

We departed from the Naples airport last June and will do so again in early October. It's fine. It's small and easy to find your way around; I felt perfectly safe. Right in front of the entrance is an attractively planted rotary. I think there may have been a palm tree or two; I remember it was green and very human scale.

I've only traveled North and Central so this will be a first for Southern Italy. I'm not worried (traveled to many locations in the world) but persons keep saying "stay away from Naples, the crime is major!!" and stuff like that. But if I can avoid taking the train all the way back to Rome I'll be happy.

I was at the Naples airport 2 weeks ago and it was absolutely fine.
I did not see any other part of Naples as we were picked up at the airport, but the airport itself was no problem and I would not hesitate to fly into there again.

I wouldn't take anyone's opinion seriously who has never traveled or lived there. There are many people on this board who have vacationed there or are planning to, it seems to get mostly good review here. Big cities are big cities, is there really much of a difference?

We loved Naples and didn't feel unsafe at all. The train station area is a little seedy but just walk like you know where you're going, don't chat with strangers, and you'll be fine. The same rules I'd hope you employ at home

We flew to Naples airport from Nice two years ago, and got a good laugh when we realized that the only people IN the airport were the people on our plane and the airport staff. It was early in the morning, but it couldn't have felt safer or more comfortable.

I've flown out of Naples and taken the train from Naples to Rome. While I didn't feel unsafe in either, I probably felt safer in the airport. I thought the train station was more hectic and crazy than the airport, and our driver who dropped us at the train station gave us some stern warnings about holding onto our belongings while in line for tickets.

But as my neighbor will tell, all those cops with machine guns didn't help here when she was standing in the middle of the Rome airport screaming for help when a couple of thugs stole her purse she had grasped firmly and the straps wound around her arms. Apparently they cut the straps and were gone in a flash. To this day she says, "they can't stop a purse snatcher, how the hell are they gonna stop a terrorist?"

Yes, there can be a huge difference from one big city to another. Some are very safe, some very much not safe, most somewhere in between the extremes.
Although it has improved the last few years through a huge effort by the Italian and provincial governments, crime and poverty rates are much higher in southern Italy, especially Naples, than in the more northern parts of the country.
That said, the vast majority of tourists just about anywhere are unlikely to crime victims. And the airport in Naples is not noted as a high crime area of the city.
