Rome Neighborhood Hotel
We have been to Rome several times. We are looking for a hotel in a 'neighborhood' for a week. We were thinking of Trastevere or some other similar neighborhood, and hoping for something under $150 (in March).
Thanks

You might consider the Borromini, in the Parioli district. It's away from most of the major tourist attractions but in a nice residential area and close to a small park. Most of the surrounding buildings are well-kept apartments.

Rooms are nice. Decent breakfast. Helpful staff. However, it might not meet your under-$150 criterion. That's tough to find in Rome, but not impossible.

Let us invite you
To our unique house in the heart of Fellinis Rome. Unique because of its position, a short walk from the roars and dreams of the Trevi Fountain, the Spanish Steps and its fashionable clothes, and Via Veneto with its designer shops and exclusive buildings. All the places of the Dolce Vita await you around the corner and the alleys lead you towards Piazza Navona, Imperial Forum and Colosseum. We offer you our love for hospitality and the care for details. Every comfort, professionalism and cordiality: here is our invitation for spending wonderful Roman Holidays. Most rooms are provided with private bathrooms, air conditioning, satellite TV, telephone, safe and hairdryer. Buffetbreakfast on the highest hill, with a view of the Quirinale. Arrivederci in Rome !

My experience at the Borromini was that it was just OK -- it seemed a bit overpriced for it's 4-5 star rating. I've stayed at much nicer hotels for the same price. It is in Parioli, which is a bit like the Upper East Side, Cleveland Park, Brentwood, or some other semi-suburban/still-urban pretty upscale neighborhood. If that's what you're looking for, then the Borromini would probably do you fine.

You may also want to try San Lorenzo (the university district just northeast of Termini) or Testaccio, the old meat-packing district that is hip again. I don't know of any hotels in Testaccio (they must exist, but I don't know them), but there are several in San Lorenzo. Another Fodorite found a great price on this one in San Lorenzo, though I have never stayed there (but it looks nice in the pictures):

http://www.charmingrome.com/casadellapalma/index.html
