is it possible to travel by train to naples from rome and then go to capri by hydrofoil and return to naples and get on another train back to rome within the same day???I think I also made this trip in the '70s but don't remember the details. please help. will be traveling in mid-march. thanks a lot.

It is - with a few extra steps - but you'd be mad to try.

I found it hard work just travelling back one way from Capri to Rome to catch a flight home, & wished I'd booked a flight from Naples.

My journey went

- walk to funicular station
- take funcular to port
- walk to hydrofoil
- take hydrofoil to Naples
- take taxi from port to station
- take train to Rome

I won't bore you with the arduous Termini-Ciampino part (underground + bus) but presumably you will need to take some form of transport to Termini before you begin.

Capri is nice if you're staying there but I've always thought it must seem horrible if you're just doing a day trip. There can be huge queues to get the funicular up to Capri town & then the main square & surrounding streets are really crowded. Save it for another trip when you can stay a few nights & enjoy the island's beauty away from the crowds & after the daytrippers have gone. In the late spring or summer - I don't see much point in going there in March.

Of course not. If you do it again, you won't remember it again. :)

I suggest that you either spend a day in Naples or overnight on Capri.

Rh - Of course the nicer way to do it would be to stay overnight - as Caroline and Ira have said.

But logistically it's quite viable as a day-trip if you don't mind a long day.

The train ride is under 2 hours, the hydrofoil to Capri takes less than an hour - so with an early start you could be in Naples before 09.00 and in Capri by 10.30 - 11.00.

If you catch the last hydrofoil back (- currently 19.10) this would allow you the best part of a day to visit.

I really can't see the point of this trip.

It'll take all day to travel there and back, and as Caroline says, Capri is a relaxing beautiful island to stay on when the weather is sunny.

It really doesn't have much to offer in March.

There are much more viable options for daytrips from Rome. Why do you want to go to Capri so badly?

Is it physically doable? Yes.

Is it mentally doable? No way.

Transportation time alone would consume at least 7 hours:
2 hours train Rome-Naples
1/2 hour (minimum) to get to ferry port
1 hour hydrofoil ride to Capri

Doing that round trip is 7 hours right there, then factor in standing in line, and the funicular up and down Capri, and Murphy's Law, and ..... you get the idea. If you don't mind that much schlepping in one day, for only what would be a few hours' enjoyment of Capri, then by all means give it a try. But I think you'd be crazy to do so. If you want to go to Capri, you should spend at least one night in the process just to make the transportation easier.
