Interested in opinions on 2 and 3 star hotels or B and B in Rome, convenient to attractions.

How many people?

Budget?

Time of year?

We stayed at Hotel Duca d'Alba last August for 3 nights. We had booked one large room but when we got there, we were given 2 doubles. That was not a problem. The hotel, which is rated 3 stars, was reasonably priced and located near the Colosseum. In addition, there were some fairly good restaurants close by. People complain about noise from the Irish bar across the street, but it didn't bother me. Breakfast, which was included in the room rate, was very good. Hope this helps.

FYI, the number of stars a hotel or B&B is given does not relate to quality, charm, location or rate. It is determined by the number and type of amenities offered, such as elevator, restaurant, room service, air conditioning, meeting facilites, on-site parking, view, etc. Some of these may be important to you, but I'm guessing the rate and location are the primary concerns.

So, as nytraveler asked, what's your budget, number of travelers and date of your trip? Any special needs?

Both websites have traveler reviews and ratings, photos, location maps, available amenities, etc.

We stayed at the Hotel Canova, on Via Urbana and loved the location.
Via Cavor metro stop is a short walk from the hotel. Forum down at the end of the street. We walked to Barberini one evening, nice walk up some hills. We are 65 and 78. Good location to walk to lots of sights.

In July 2006 we stayed at the Morgana Royal Court Hotel which is located very close to the Termini rail station. Very clean, A/C, good breakfast. They had a nice little courtyard where you can relax after a long day of siteseeing with a drink. Also, they had a rooftop terrace with great views over the city where you can sit and enjoy your own beverage or order from the very friendly staff. Decent restaurants in the area, close to everything.

If you are staying even four nights you might consider trying an apartment rentals. We felt we got much better value for money in an apartment when we were in Rome for a week last year and enjoyed having the kitchen and extra space.

Thank you all. We are looking at about $150 per night for two nights in October.

$150 a night is not impossible, but it will be a challenge. Don't wait too long to make a reservation. October is one of the busiest months in Rome.
