Anywhere in the historical center.

We have stayed near Vatican, near the Trevi, and near Campo di Fiori. I loved the Campo best. Perfect for walking, shopping, and dining.

I can recommend apt. in the area if you'd like.

My wife, Gretchen, and my three children (Franco, Adrienne, Maximus) and I like to stay near Via Margutta. There are plenty of restaurants and shops in this area. You can walk over to the Metro at Spagna to get around the rest of Rome.

My children like to drink from the fountain on the Via Margutta because they are fans of the Twilight Series and drinking from the fountain is supposed to bring special powers. (My daughter is a clairvoyant.)

My wife's brother is a priest at the Vatican. His name is Father Ralph and is very well known.

Our favorite restaurant in Rome is the McDonald's to the right of the Spanish Steps. It is so clean and that is important for a growing family. We like a family atmosphere.

Enjoy, enjoy the great outdoors of Rome.

There are actually many parts of Rome that fit your criteria.

The historic center is quite large and the most popular. We used to stay near the Pantheon but this area has simply become too crowded over the past 6-8 years so now we stay near the Borghese Gardens off Via Veneto or on Via Capo d'Africa.

We like going "home" to a quieter area and we also really like hotels with roof top terraces.
