Rome in the evening
 
My friend and I have rented an apartment near the Vatican. We want to do some interesting evening walks and dining. Any advice re safety of metro and or bus from Vatican to the Trevi Fountain and other attractions? Are we better off to take a taxi? Any advice re places to dine in Vatican area? We are female and in our 40's.
We are there Nov 28-Dec. 7 if anyone wants to meet for a meal.

the area near the vatican is really calm and quite but there are nice restaurans and pizzerie.
From there to Trevi fountain in the evening maybe is better to take a taxi as metro A stops at 9pm in this period.

I would recommend taking a bus to Trastevere one evening. Santa Maria in Trastevere is open in the evenings and there are lots of restaurants. The #23 runs from the Piazza del Risorgimento south along the Tiber. We took it several times at night in Feb/March (were staying in the centro storico, meeting friends near the Vatican). For the return trip north on bus #23 you have to cross the Tiber.
You can also walk across the Isola tiberina from Trastevere to the old ghetto neighborhood where there are many good restaurants. the Teatro di Marcello and Portico d'Ottavia ruins are illuminated at night.

The #62 bus runs between the Vatican and Largo Argentina, near the Piazza della Rotunda/Piazza navona area.

If you decide to take buses be sure to get tickets ahead of time at a tabacconist--we found the machines at the stops to be very unreliable. There are also passes but these are more expensive if you are only taking one or two trips/day.

Don't miss walking round St Peter's Square in the evening. The square is much more impressive when it's illuminated and the crowds are gone. The atmosphere is amazing.

I agree St. Peter's Square is magical at twilight/night. We watched the daylight fade and the lights go on one evening and it was very beautiful --and almost empty
