Rome in August-restaurants closed?

We will be spending a week in Rome in mid- August (only time we can go). Eating out is always a big part of travel for us but will we find that most restaurants are closed? Thanks

We were in Rome the first week of August a few years ago. Had no problem finding restaurants. The cab drivers said the town was less crowded because of August, but it was hard for us to notice as there was still a lot of traffic. Prepare for the heat..it was over 100 degrees.

Rome is a major tourist site. Why should restaurants, especially those placed in the center of the city, close down in August, when there are the most tourists? Sure, if you move off the center you will find lots of closed restaurants, but in the center nearly all will be open.

we were in Rome a year ago last August for the long weekend (end of August) and were told that the last two weeks was a very popular time for natives of Rome to go on holiday, elsewhere! We did find it a little less crowded (we left on the Monday, and could tell the traffic returning was crazy) but only noticed a few restaurants off the beaten track closed. Certainly no reason to postpone a trip!

Rome was as open as we needed to be in August 2000--only a few businesses were noticeably closed for "ferie," as they call the holiday.
