Rome Hotels - Valadier or Genio?
We are in Rome for 6days in February. After much research and reading Fodors' posting, we are narrowing down our selection to 2 hotels (both 4* and similar prices). Please help us decide.

Genio has great reviews and it is located at Piazza Navona (near all the 'great Roman sites'). Valadier also has great reviews and the hotel seems nicer than Genio, but location is Piazza Popolo (which is close but not close as Genio). What is the walking distance between the tow Piazza and which hotel has the between location? Much thanks.

It's around a mile or so, maybe a 20 minute walk, depending on how many shop windows you stop to look in!!

Both areas have much to offer , Valadier is very near the spanish Stairs . Rome is so walkable that neither should be a problem.

If you choose the valadier please report back as we will be there on 2/27

Hi.

The Genio is about a block from Piazza Navona and close to a lot of wonderful...stuff. There is also a great news stand across the street for getting your daily International Herald Tribune. The Vatican is also a short, pleasant walk from the Genio. It is true that everything is walkable, so you can't miss either way.

At the Genio the rooms on the street are not advised because of substantial traffic noise; but they are very accommodating in giving you a back room if requested.

Nice trip!

After an exhaustive search I decided to book the Valadier Hotel for a trip to Rome in late February. I choose it for the location and because an Italian friend of mine recommended it as a fairly "untouristy" hotel with nice ambiance and rennovated rooms. I trusted his judgement and booked the suite.

Thanks, Rita. I think this is what we are going to do as well. Also, have you consider how you were going to get to the hotel from FCO? Train or Taxi?

Anthony, I was worried about the trip in from the airport because the last time I did it by taxi it was an outrageous price. Now, fortunately for me my italian friend is picking me up but before I had these arrangements I found a Fodor's posting with a website for airport pick-up service.

I emailed them at [email protected] and they quoted these rates

Rome airport to the Valadier
Euro 36,15 day rate for 1 or 2 passengers
Euro 43,90 night rate

try them and see. What days are you in Rome?

Rita
The Intercontinental located right on top of the Spanish Steps is a great hotel and perfectly situated right in the middle of everything. The Intercontinental is right next to one of the best hotels in Rome (The Hasler- with a restaurant on top overlooking the steps). You can not go wrong with the Intercontinental in Rome. Everything else should be a nice walking distance which is what you do in Rome (Spanish Steps, all the piazzas, great restaurants, with the exception of the Coliseum, St Peters Basilica, the Vatican , take a cab.

The hotels located as close to the spanish steps are the most ideal ones to stay at to see all the sights and feel what Rome is really like.

ENJOY.
Rita:

We will be in Rome from Feb 14 -19. Thanks for the transport info. We will probably be catching the train to Termini first then a cab to save a little.
