Rome Hotels

What is with the price of hotels in Rome??
Planning a trip in April and finding available 3 star hotels under 300 Euros is a challenge.
Any thoughts?

Try a convent

Try Venere.co I just found 75 hotels under 300 Euros

I think it's much too early to use venere.com for April 2008. The only hotels listing there now are probably the ones who get most or all of their business from there.

Hotel Portoghesi has twins at 200 Euro, only 10 Euro more than the price they are showing for 2007.

Try Hotel MonteCarlo, not near the city center, but an easy metro ride away. About 700 meters from Termini. Very safe neighborhood (2 embassies). Probably about 120 euros per night. Very nice staff, clean but small rooms, really strange elevator.

Try Hotel Alimandi near the Vatican. A double goes for less than 200E last time I checked. Nice rooms, excellent "English Style" breakfast. Free transportation to the airport.

The Adriano is my new favorite. I had no complaints considering the price and perfect location. It couldn't be more central!

Hotel Smeraldo - near Campo di Fiora was E175/night including breakfast when we were there in late May this year. Clean - great location and reasonable price - kind of small rooms/showers.

We were extremely happy with the service we received at Best Bed and Breakfast, and it's well within that price range. (www.bestbb.it)

Look into Bed & Breakfasts:
Fellini Inn, www.fellinibnb.com
Nicolas Inn, www.nicolasinn.com

http://www.hotelmodigliani.com/

our favorite is the Modigliani...boutiquey, elevator, near Spanish Steps, Via Veneto, the Trevi and Piazza Barberini..on a quiet street. Our family and several friends also prefer it. Rates should be around 150E's ($206 now..but who knows about next sprng??)

You may also want to consider renting an apartment. they offer very good value compared to hotels and you would find a lot of options for under 300 euros/night especially if you are staying for a week.
There are lots of threads about rentals in Rome

We stayed at Hotel Smeraldo near the Campo di Fiori in July 2006. Our family of 4 had 2 double rooms and it was 100 Euros/room including breakfast. They have great air cond. at this place too.

In 2002 we stayed at Hotel Italia, which was also very comfortable with a/c and ceiling fans. Can't remember what we paid but both of these are in the Rick Steves' book.

We used Albergo Romano, just two blocks from the Colosseum and had a good time walking around easily, coming back to rest in between things to see. In April 2008, I see it's 155 euros for a double.

My Rome photo-report page for day one has some views taken from our rooms and one of the exterior (it has only 16 rooms) and links to pages of the hotel site, which can be hard to find.

The rooms are modest and serviceable, clean, and comfortable. When I was there in May 2006, you couldn't beat the price for that location.
