ANY THOUGHTS ON HOTEL PORTOGHESI OR HOTEL REGNO. BOTH LOOK LIKE GOOD LOCATIONS AND SIMILAR PRICING. ANY THOUGHTS ON HOTEL'S HELPFULNESS AND ACCOMODATIONS?

avoid the Portoghese. There have been issues with that hotel. Do a search on this forum to see hat others say. I saw the Regno while I was in Rome it look OK. I also recommend the Hotel Due Torri which is in the same area. Its a great value and has a nice staff and comfortable rooms. It also has modern bathroms. Do a search on this forum and you will see all the positive comments! I have links and some pics of it on my websight, as well as info on restaurants, sights, shopping, etc...

http://home.earthlink.net/~richardab

We stayed at the Hotel Regno in September 2000, and learned to regret that decision! Surly/apathetic front desk personnel, tired furnishings and common areas in dire need of updating, constant street noise from Via del Corso, the list goes on and on. There are many better choices in this part of Rome, the Hotel Due Torri being one.

I e-mailed the Regno back months ago regarding price and availability. The reply message was surprisingly rude and surly. That's one hotel that won't see business from me.

We stayed at the Hotel Portoghesi in March and enjoyed it.

The hotel is small, maybe 25 or so rooms. It has been refurbished relatively recently and is spotless. Our room was on the small side but it had a double dresser and an armoire and the bathroom had a double sink and was all marble. The shower was tiny but suitable.

The negatives I've read here pertain mostly to the staff. They were not friendly but were very helpful...gave excellent directions and recommendations and always had the taxi there when requested.

If you have additional questions, write me.

Jane: I am leaving for Rome a week from today!! So excited. Anyway, after MUCH research on this site and many, many other travel sites and guides, I've decided to stay at the Portoghesi. Although I haven't gone on my trip yet, here are my thoughts and experiences...hope it helps in someway. I too was concerned with what "richardb" mentions..the Portoghesi does have some negative comments on this site. But, the comments only reflect the personality of the staff. As Carol mentions, the staff may not be super/sun-shine cheery, but they are extremely, extremely effeicent. I have had to book then cancel then re-book my resevations (b/c of my own reasons) and the Portoghesi was VERY accomodating. Always responding to me within hours of my request. Plus, I've been able to do everything via internet and email, which is a big plus for me. I guess you need to weigh what you like when you travel. If you're looking for the staff to pamper you, then maybe it's not the right hotel for you. I'm pretty self sufficient and do a lot of research before I travel, so I'm not looking for over-accomodating staff. What I do look for is something central, affordable and clean. And from all of my findings, including many personal recommendations from travellers who have stayed there, the Portoghesi meets those requirements. I wanted to pay about $125 a night for central Rome. I'm back at the end of Nov., and can give you a first hand report then. Probably more information than you wanted, but hope it helps. Let me know if you have any other questions. Good luck!
