Rome hotel recommendation

Hi
I am looking for a hotel in Rome for my parents next March. I have looked on Expedia but don't know where to start as I don't know anything about the city! It needs to be 3 star or above, fairly centrally located and reasonably priced!
Thanks a lot in anticipation

Cathy,
What would you consider "reasonably priced"?

There's lots of info re Rome hotels in the archives. Just time <Rome + hotel> (without the little arrows) in the search box at the top of your page. Past posts will appear on the left hand side of your page. Sit back and browse!

Also check on TripAdvisor.com. They have great hotel reviews.

I was very happy with the Albergo Cesari. It's not fancy or pretentious but was attractive and clean. The location and breakfast couldn't be beat -- and I thought the price was quite reasobale. I walked EVERYWHERE (but I'm a big walker). I want to go back -- I'm jealous!

Cesari is a good recommendation, as is del Senato. See www.venere.com

Best wishes,

The Cesari or Senato might be reasonably priced for their location and "niceness", but the rates still seem high. The Senato lists prices of €195-295 for a double room, and some posters have reported this standard double room is quite small. But almost all posters seem to be quite satisfied by their stays there.

CathyY, the cheapest hotel rates are generally by the train station Termini. Some people have no objection to staying there, while others do not like the ambience or the somewhat further distance from attractions. You can get where you need to go by bus or metro, or long walks.

The most central areas for a hotel are somewhere in the quadrangle defined by the Pantheon (like the Senato hotel mentioned), Piazza Navona, the Trevi Fountain, and the Spanish Steps. (I haven't been to Rome yet, but that is what I've deduced. I don't have a map in front of me, so I can't perfectly visualize this quadrangle either!)

Hotels near the Vatican are of course convenient for visiting the Vatican, and often have very reasonable rates. They are a little less convenient for the other attractions listed above.

I'm staying at Hotel Julia near the Trevi Fountain - http://www.hoteljulia.it . You can write to the manager and he might give you a discount over the posted rates. I will report on how it is when I get back in January.

You can read the reviews of various hotels and see what you think.
