Rome Hotel Reco for Thin???
 

Can some of you peeps please help Thin out and recommend a hotel in Rome for 9 days?

Keith and I are looking for a hotel room that is bright, cheerful, and has a nice bathroom. We would like to be anywhere between Piazza Navona and Villa Borghese area. We don't want to go over 300 euros a night.

We are really looking for recommendations from SEASONED FODORITES whom we can trust.

The Hotel Campo de Fiori is booked.
The Hotel Torre Argentina is booked.
The Hotel Portoghesi looks very dark, but the nabe looks nice.
Waiting to hear from Hotel Modigliani for opening.

What about Albergo del Senato with a view of the Pantheon?

But have you thought about renting an apartment? Considering the length of time you'll be there, I'm sure you could find something <i>fabulous</i> for under 300 euro a night.

I don't know whether I meet your standards for making recommendations, but we've stayed in these hotels in the Piazza Navona-Pantheon area:

Hotel Nazionale, located near the Pantheon on the pedestrian Piazza Montecitorio, next to the Chamber of Deputies. Rooms were roomy and bathrooms nice.

Hotel Genio, just steps from Piazza Navona. Our little group had five rooms, which varied greatly in size. Request for a larger room suggested. We all enjoyed the rooftop terrace.

Residenza Canali, also right at the Piazza Navona. The terrace rooms, one of which we were unable to get, are said to be wonderful. However, our room was probably the smallest hotel room we've ever had, so I recommend a room with terrace or no room at all here. No lift, and several flights of stairs.

Like Byrd, I too am uncertain about being a "seasoned Fodorite", mainly because I don't know whether that refers to the quality of one's prose on this board or traveling. For what it's worth, I can second Byrd'd suggestion about Hotel Nazionale on Piazza Montecitorio. The proximity of the Chamber of Deputies makes security rather tight around the area so the noise level from the piazza is negligible at night. The hotel is listed as a four star (not sure about current room rates) and we were very satisfied during our four night stay with the room (junior suite with large bath), the staff, and breakfast. We did not take an evening meal there so I can't comment.

Albergo Senato is booked.

I had clients stay at the Nazionale Montecitorio last year; they liked it so much they canceled plans for later in their trip to go back and stay there for two nights before leaving Italy.

If you can get it, the weekend deal of 4 nights for the price of 3 (or maybe it's 3 for the price of 2) is very good.

I'm not sure why this hotel hasn't had more buzz here, but I'm glad to see it come up tonight.

Perfect location.

The Santa Chiara is in that location and price range, but it's a 3 star.

We were on a tighter budget than you quote, and we did not stay at this hotel, but we were attracted to it when we were window-shopping. We walked in to see the lobby and pick up a business card. It looks lovely, and a great location. You might want to check it out.

Guess you didn't bother reading the rules that Fodor's has regarding advertising before you registered on Fodor's today. Or perhaps you think the rules do not apply to you. HI Thin, we also stayed at the Santa Chiara. Great location! Just around the corner from the Pantheon but on a tiny and therefore rather quiet street. We found it a pleasant and relaxing, altho I cannot specifically remember the bathrooms. I would call the decor of the rooms relaxing more than "cheerful". Dark woods, modern, great AC which we found a relief from the hot streets of Rome. The lobby *is* what I would call cheerful w/a very traditional type of decor.

Thin, I've had good luck at the Residenza in Farnese in the Campo dei Fiori area.

It's a four star with some very nice rooms, lots of light, good A/C and a really great location. It's just off the Piazza Farnese -- some of its front rooms look directly into the Palazzo Farnese, now the French embassy. Others look into the garden at the back of the palazzo.

I've stayed several times, and so I've seen different rooms, some singles and a few doubles. They've all been very good, I thought. I think it was established as a boutique hotel just a few years ago, and I first read about it in the New York Times. The deluxe doubles are quite large -- I had one with a little sofa and a writing desk.

Have you looked into getting a deal (9 nights is a good length of time) at the St. George, the Raphael or even the Minerve? I've only stayed in apartments in Rome, and once in a suite at Albergo del Senato--a great choice, btw--but this past Dec/Jan we were in an apartment right next to the Raphael so I did go in a take a look-see. Very nice. I do prefer the location of the St. George, just a personal preference, and the next time I splurge in Rome I will give it a try b/c there's a spa on the premises and who doesn't like that?

I second the recommendation of the Residenza Canali, as long as you don't mind walking up flights of stairs. It is right around the corner from the Piazza Navona, and walkable to pretty much everywhere in Rome.

We've stayed at most expensive hotels in Rome, but next time we visit we plan to go back to the Residenza Canali.

I think the Raphael might not be up to your standards ;).

flipping throught the Conde Nast Johansens guide in our hotel room last night I saw this and thought of you. Casa Montani - Luxury Town House www.johansens.com/casamontani it looked rather good and a double was quoted at 180E - 280E. The blurb says "Looking for an exclusive hideaway in the heart of Rome?" Third floor townhouse.

Hope this helps if you haven't already decided on something.

We have book the St. Regis Grand Hotel for 7 nights.

The St. George looked really nice but we wanted to stay near the Borghese Gardens. I really like public parks.

We are staying in a Deluxe Room at the Spring House Vatican City for two nights so we can explore the area. I can easily spend two days in the Vatican Museum. We are staying here because the hotel was recommended by Seamus.

I just hope all those crazy Catholics don't cast aspersions on a Jew (Keith) and a Queer Quaker(me). ROFL!!!!!!!!!!!

Sounds like you got a good place. Sorry about the Modigliani. I never tried emailing them - I called. My experience with emailing hotels in Europe has been fairly dismal overall.

Two days at the Vatican Museum? God help you!
