Rome Hotel near Train Station
 
We are looking for suggestions for a hotel in Rome near the train station as we will be using the rail service for our trip. Ang suggestions on hotel or train service will be greatly appreciated. We plan to travel south from Rome using the train service and staying in Sorrento for several days. Any hotel suggestions in Sorrento?

Generally speaking, it's been my experience that
hotels by train stations in big European cities are not the most appealing lodging! Given the noise, traffic congestion, crowds, filth (in some cases), you may be better off finding a hotel further away from the station. Unless one of you travelling has trouble walking or some other disability, I would strongly suggest looking beyond the train station area.

Try Hotel Universo on Via Principe Amedeo or Hotel Quirinale on Via Nazionale. Both are nice (but not luxurious), 4 star hotels near Termini and the Opera House. I think the "unsafeness" of train station surroundings in Rome and all cities have often been exaggerated. (Vicki - I answered another one of your questions several weeks back. Feel free to write me directly if you have further questions.)

We checked into the Hotel Quirinale on Via Nazionale one year ago today and it was great. It's not right on top of the train station but it was close enough to walk-about a half mile or less-with our luggage. The street outside is noisy during the day but not bad at night.

Hi Vicki...we stayed at Soggiorno Angela Fuoco, which is on the Via Milazzo, #3. The street is right by the station, but the address is a bit tricky, as the name plate is small; it's a family penzione run by an older couple. However, it is very clean, the beds were good, and I believe the rate was about 50 or 60,000 lire for double bed w/o bath. The phone # is 4462106, and I think you need to call before you walk over. We were quite happy with this penzione- the matron is very no-nonsense but the room was great for the price & locale. Other than that, we met a man named Domenico Bassetti who runs a Tavola Calda at 68 Via Marsala (right alongside the station) and he also rents rooms. I give you his name b/c he seemed like a wonderful man- very Italian, if that makes sense- and speaks English well, as he lived in Canada for awhile. I don't know where you're from, but as we are Canadian, he chatted with us for hours and had us in stiches the whole time. It might be worth checking out his prices, although we never saw his rooms. As for Sorrento, when we were south of Rome, we stayed in Pompei and day-tripped from there. We passed through Sorrento on our way to Capri, and the town looks great, very picturesque, but I'm afraid that's all I can tell you about it, as we barely saw any of it! Hope this info helps and have a great trip- Italy is fabulous.
