Rome Hotel for under $70 night for single occupancy?
 

Hi,
I'm going to be in Rome in early November and am looking for a cheap (under $70) room for single occupancy. I'd like it to be clean and in a safe location for a single woman. Does anybody have any recommendations? So far, the only cheap ones I've found are right by the train station.

Check Santa Brigida convent or a convent stay for that matter. Nov is low season so you should have no problems. Also check Venere.com for choices, even if you do not use them as venue.

The following hotel gets consistent good reviews; ask for a room with private bath; rooms away from the street: http://www.hotelboccaccio.com/ They will only change sheets and towels when prompted by guest, which is becoming more and more the housekeeping standard procedure.

I am checking into the convents, thanks. As for Boccaccio, it's 100 euro a night if you want a private bathroom, as I do.

Where do you want to be? Do you need a private bath or are you willing to share? There are quite a few convents with private bath in that price range. Most have curfews, but some don't and they range from 10 pm to midnight.

Don't bother checking Santa Brigida as their rates are over 100E for a single. I've stayed at Santa Sofia on Piazza Madonna dei Monti for 50E including a very basic breakfast. Private bath with midnight curfew. 2-3 minute walk from the Cavour subway stop and a 5 minute walk from the forum.

I would try Fraterna Domus first as their location is better, but their curfew is a bit earlier (11 pm I think). There are others around Fra Domus, but some have shared bath or earlier curfew. It just depends on what you want.

I do want to have a private bath and I want a location with good access to tourist sites. For curfew, no earlier than 11, just in case a daytrip somehow runs late. I'll check out those two convents, thanks.

aggie-- good access is a function of staying close to a Metro stop, so consider that. I stayed last time near Vatican very close to Cipro metro. Not close to most tourist sites, but tremendously accesible via Metro. Definitely worth the $$$ I saved!

I only looked at private baths with at least and 11 pm curfew and my 1st choice was Fra Domus (booked), 2nd choice Il Roasario (booked) so I ended up with Santa Sofia. There are lots of others in central Rome. One at Torre Argentina (Casa Familigia) is listed at only 27E per night (price may be a bit out of date) with private bath, but I haven't seen reviews for it.

You can search on 060608.it which is a website by the Rome Tourist Board. Click Roma Centro for macrozone and then if you want to select a more specific zone you can. You have to click applica each time or it won't reset to the area you want. Once you pull up the list of convents some will show a website link. Others won't, but you can click on the name and get the details (private bath/price/curfew) and a location map. Click on the camera on the map which will pull up the acutal street view and zoom in a few times. This really gives you a feel for the area. Keep in mind that the prices will be a bit out of date as the Italians don't seem to keep their websites updated very well.

I looked into this women's hostel, Foresteria Orsa Maggiore (not a convent, but an International Women's Center in Trastevere) a couple of years ago; my traveling companions included one man, so it did not work for us, but I thought it sounded like an interesting place:

The hostel information is listed under Foresteria, and you can choose English to read about it. It has a variety of rooms at a variety of prices - w/ or w/o bath, dorm or single, etc. There is an on-site cafe, and it has classes and other events. I did accidently walk by it while I was wandering in Trastevere; the street seemed quiet and the location was not bad.

No complaints. Clean room, good location, breakfast included.

Orsa Maggiore is more than the OP's requested price unless you share a bath.

You've gotten some good guidance here, but if you're still looking, you might check out the website www.hospites.it, which lists convent stays throughout Italy. I searched for Rome at 70 euros or under for a single and came up with 51 options. Not all are going to be suitable, and it takes some work to sift through the listings in Italian ... but worth a look.

I appreciate all the responses. I have an email out to Hotel San Petrino and I'm checking the convent links. Hotel Italia is too expensive at 68 euro a night. I'm looking for about $70 USD (about 50 euro) per night.

Linda and Steve, the owners of The Beehive, have a guest room in their apartment - bedroom, small sitting room, private bathroom - for 50 Euro. It's not in the very center of Rome, but it has good transport connections.

Have you looked at the Hotel Centrale? I came across it when I was researching hotels in Rome. It is in a great area, near Piazza Poppolo and the Borghese Gardens. This is my favourite area of Rome.

I stayed at a hotel--one of the Bettoja hotels--on Via Gorgio Amendola near Termini station. The area was fine and I had no problems. My parents stayed at the same hotel years later on trip to Italy. They walked to all the area cafes at night for dinner and also had no problems.

I just thought I'd report back that I finally found a place. After receiving many "sorry we are full" or too high prices over the weekend, I heard back from the St. Elizabeth convent and will be staying there. Thanks for everybody's help.
