Rome Hotel - Central Location

I would like to stay in a central location in Rome, somewhere that is close to shopping and dining. Any recommendations on the best area to stay in and the best hotels in those areas would be appreciated.

Area near the Pantheon is about as centrally located to the sights as you can get. Albergo del Senato is an excellent choice. Stayed there two months ago and already planning to go back next year.

Lori,

There is a ton of info on Rome Hotels here but before we can offer suggestions, we'll need more info such as price range. Not quite sure what "best hotels" means to you...

If you are doing a search and you want a central location, look for hotels listed in the "Historic Center" doesn't get more central than that.

Two of the more popular hotels on this board are Albergo del Senato and Santa Chiara.

We stayed at the Santa Chiara last year and enjoyed it very much. We would definitely stay there again.

They are both right in front of each other located directly behind the Pantheon.

The absolute best location.
15 minutes to the Forum.
1 minute to the Pantheon
5 Minutes to Piaza Navona
5 minutes to the Fountain of Trevi.
15 minutes to the Spanish Steps.

Need I go on?

I agree that the Pantheon area is the best place to stay. I will be in Rome for the 15th time next week and will be at the del Senato; also like the Santa Chiara. If money were not an issue I would stay at the de la Minerve, my absolute favorite!

We stayed at the santa Chiara about 2 wks ago. enjoyed it very much. Great location by the Pantheon and within walking distance of other areas including Spanish Steps, Vatican. Good buffet breakfast and helpfull, friendly staff. I would stay there again.

I stayed at Hotel Julia, on a guiet street off Piazza Barberini. It was a great location, and the hotel rate was even better! Everything within walking distance: Trevi, Spanish Steps, Via Veneto, etc. Also, around the corner was a 24 hour internet cafe. The hotel is small and that's what made staying there a great stay for me. Hotel Julia does have a website. Don't expect a 4 star...I think it is a two or three star, but very clean, safe and friendly. Also, the breakfast in the morning was decent. I would stay there again, and have made numerous recommendations.
