Rome - hop on hop off bus tour - when to get

Hi,

I'll be arriving Rome on 5th August and leaving on 8th (it will be the beginning of our honeymoon). Never been before. I'm tempted to get the 48 hr hop-on hop-off bus tour :

http://www.viator.com/tours/Rome/Rom...11-3523ROMOPEN

However Viator says that it can only be purchased online, and you MUST specify a date of when you want to start using it. Since we'll be in Rome on the 5th from a long flight, I'm not sure if we'll just want to relax and use the bus ticket on the 6th morning, or definitely start using it on the 5th.

If I were to buy online, I'd just get the 5th, since we can just go to the bus stop and validate the ticket and come back, and it'll be valid for 48 hrs till 7th evening.

HOWEVER - is this kind of thing available in Rome on the stop? Viator says "only online" for their services - but I'd like some personal opinions...has anyone else made use of these tours and purchased them on the spot?

Viator quotes $26.51 per person. We will stay near Piazza Venezia. I'm interested to know if I can just do this in rome and for how much roughtly, and how/where to get a ticket if I want one.

Many thanks!

Hi Rish - I wouldn't bother with the hop-on hop-off bus. You can stand around waiting for it for ages, then find it's full

You can do the same thing with a 'BTI' tourist ticket (- € 11) - which allows you unlimited travel on buses and metro for 3 days. Much better value ...

You can find details at:
http://en.turismoroma.it/benvenuti_a...citta#Bus_tram

Hope this helps ...

Hi Steve,

Thanks very much..thats interesting. I can see on their site that they recommend "110 OPEN-TOP TOURIST BUS" www.trambusopen.com for the tourist bus, but Viator.com seems a little cheaper for it.

As you said, better to go for the "BTI" - but I assume these are normal buses, but still good enough to travel with? (especially as a tourist who doesn't know his way around?)

Do you know how I can purchase this? When I go into the link it takes me to an Italian page,
http://www.atac.roma.it/index.asp?p=...g=2&lingua=ITA
Just wondering if I can get these on the bus or near Piazza Venezia anywhere? (where I am staying)

Many thanks!!

The city bus red #110 is a HO HO bus that covers over 80 sightseeing destinations in a 2.5 hr loop. The ticket is good for 24 hours. The bus has an plug in audio guide. Sit on top in front for the best views. It's a wonderful way to see an overview of the city. After the loop you can stay on and stop at the sighst that interest you or take the Metro. The Metro is very very easy to use.

I avoided the 110 hop on hop off bus the first time we went to Rome but took it the second time with my daughter, and enjoyed it. Take it around 6 when your feet are tired. It will have cooled off by then and you can enjoy all the iconic sights of Rome as the light dims. We walked up and purchased our tickets at the tourist information booth on Via del Corso at Via Minghetti which is a stone's throw from the the Trevi fountain. We paid 16 euro for each ticket.
