A half hour train ride away is Appia Antica, a ruined Roman small city. Quite a lovely spot, and lots to see.

I've gone down to Herculaneum (sp?) (a smaller version of Pompeii) via Naples on train. It's a long day but worth it.

sangrail refers, I think, to Ostia Antica... This is a decent day trip, although it could be hot. Another option is the lake that the Castelli Romani towns sit around. We spent a day there, and lightly exploring the towns, and in hot weather, it was pleasant. There are clean and pleasant swimming places here; the lake is Lake Albano.

A google search for Castelli Romani came up with several day trip and touring options.

In addition to Herculaneum, Pomepeii and Ostia Antica (all of which are great daytrips), you could also visit one of the hill towns. Orvieto is a wonderful town to visit and just a little over an hour from Rome via train. Hadrian's Villa would also make a great daytrip.

A trip to Villa D'Este at Tivoli, is highly recommended. Beautiful gardens and fountains. About an hour and a bit from Rome. You can travel there independently if adventurous, but if you have limited time I would go on a tour. There are plently to choose from. Your hotel may have a discount arrangement with a tour operator,so it is worth checking. Have fun!
