Rome - Frescoes at the Santi Quattro Coronati monastery?

A few months ago I read an article about some medieval frescoes in this monastery that had been restored. The article which was written in December said that they would be opened to the public in April. We are going to be in Rome next month and would like to see them.

I have not been able to find anything on the web about the visiting the frescoes so I thought I'd throw it out here. Anyone know anything about how to visit this monastery?

Thanks!

Hi iamq, we visited this church last fall. The cloisters in Santi Quattro Coronati were noted and photographed in a coffeetable book we have. We had a tiny bit of trouble finding the church, but when we got thee we found there was a double courtyard, then we were in the second courtyard with beautiful frescoes. True to the information in the tour book, you rang a bell at the side of the altar to summon a nun to open the cloister. We spent some time in the quiet cloister which looked like many others we had seen, and as we were leaving a school group was just entering, so it must be an important stop. The church was dedicated to four soldiers who were killed during Diocletian’s reign and has one of the most ancient bell towers of Rome. There were scraps of very old frescoes in the cloisters. I don't remember what tour book I used that told me about Santi Quattro Coronati I think it is open 9-12 and 4-6; It is close to San Clemente. By the way, if you haven't visited San Clemente, put it on your list.

Thanks travelbug!

San Clemente is definitely on the menu of activities for us.

I didn't see the article but it may be referring to the famous fresco cycle in the St. Sylvester chapel of this church. Besides the lovely cloister, the church is most well known for this chapel which is on the right side of the inner courtyard. Enter the door and you will see a grille with a turntable and a bell. Ring the bell and ask the nun for the key to the chapel. She will pass it to you on the turntable. The chapel is beautifully decorated with 13th century frescos depicting the life of St. Sylvester.

This is on my list for my trip in July. So are there two different spots where you ask a nun to let you in?

Grinisa, here is the link to the article. It references a "Gothic Hall". What do you think? Is this the same place?

Bill, thanks for the link. No, that doesn't seem to be the San Silvestro chapel. It looks as if it is a newly opened portion of the monastery itself, rather than the church and it's neighboring chapel. If so, it's even more reason to visit this often missed gem of a church, one of my favorite in Rome.

Thanks Grinisa.
I've e-mailed the L.A. Archdiocese as Cardinal Mahoney is the Cardinal for this church. I hope that will yield me some tips on whether this is open yet. I've also e-mailed the cbc who ran the article to see if they might also help. I've also e-mailed contextrome. One of their docents, Elizabeth Lev wrote an article about the Monastery that I came across as I was searching for information and I hoping that maybe they or she might be able to help. We'll see.

Thanks zerlina, however I can't read French. Does it say anything about when in April it will open or who to contact to find out?

Le Monde says it will open to the public in March; no date given.

The Ministero says that it will be the Augustinian community of nuns that will be in charge of admissions.

You can call them at 011-39-06 70475427. They have an English Web page, so presumably they speak English.
