Rome Fountains....trouble looming

I read in the paper today that the Aqua Virgo that feeds the Trevi fountain as well as the fountains in Borghese Gardens has been damaged. For 2000 years, the Aqua Virgo has supplied the water but damage to underground conduits caused by work on a suburban garage have brought the flow to a trickle.

For the past two weeks, they have been recyling the water in the fountains but can not continue to do so. It would be necessary to drain and clean the fountains every two weeks.

A very sad development....

This was the article I read which made it sound a little more grave a situation.

The other article sounds more promising in regards to repairing the damage.

Here is another article which is from Ansa.it (English version) regarding the fountains in Rome..a different potential problem.

I can certainly see the problem...water shortage is a global issue....but a Rome without its flowing fountains? The Eternal City would not be the same.

I can't even imagine Roma without all of its fountains running. You can hear the Trevi before you round the corner to view it. We will be in Roma again in July and it will be very sad if the fountains are dry.
