Hi
At the top of this screen is Destinations; click on it and it will take you to lots of basic info on Rome, including suggestions for short stays.
It may help you narrow down what to see and do. After that, purchase a good guide book and a map.

Rome is fairly spread out, and the metro stops are few and far between, so plan on doing a lot of walking, and for travel between venues to take longer than you might think.

The must-sees depend on your interests, but look into the following
Colosseum and Forum (a good half-day)
Vatican Museums, Sistine Chapel, and St Peter's (another half day at least)
a zillion other gorgeous churches
Borghese Gallery (advance reservations recommended)

A walking tour company for Rome that I used is the highly-rated Scala Reale, but there are several other good ones:
Enjoy Rome, Through Eternity, etc.
A good walking tour or two can help orient you, and give you the background on the most prominent sights

Hotels: what do you want to spend?
Most popular/convenient neighborhoods are the Spanish Steps, Piazza Navona, Pantheon, Campo dei Fiori.

I have file on Rome; if you'd like to see it, email me at

And don't forget to visit trevi fountain. Best to go at night and avoid the crowds. It's a beautiful fountain and there is a great gelato place nearby

RE: Trevi Fountain

Unfortunately going at night won't help as far as the crowds are concerned. I went at night, around 9pm, and it was crowded!!! So, I think you just have to bite the bullet and go whenever it fits in your schedule and wish for the best. Though I think the best time for having the least number of people would be early in the morning before 10am.
