my wife and I are going to these cities at the end of March. We are looking for some suggestions on where to stay. We are interested in small hotels, clean w/shower,and somewhat centrally located. We do not mind walking, and do not want to go broke on hotel costs

Pick up a copy Of Karen Brown's book on Italian Inns if you do not get anything from this. Our places in those cities were expensive...Aldrovandi in Rome, San carlos in Venice, but nice. Email me if you want info on these two, but do take a look at Karen's book. I use it a lot.

Hi Bill,

Rome - the Regno very very central to the sights - is in what was the old Kingdom of Italy Library
Venice - only a 2 star, small rooms, bath/shower, great breakfast, but a walk up -no elevator-3 stories high, great staff and 2 minute walk from San Marco Sq and Rialto Bridge. Worth looking into. Denise
When we went to Venice, we actually were told to stay across the Lagoon in Maestre. The hotels are half the price, cleaner and safer for your $$$, we stayed across the street from the train station, the train ride was 6 min to Venice and came every 10 min. We loved this idea!! In Florence we stayed at the Bellatini (sp) we were very impressed with the accomodations and the price was well with in our budget

We have stayed at the Hotel Miami in Rome. It is on the Via Nazionale. Rooms were clean and comfortable with showers. Try Small Italian Hotels web site, www.gteijnc.com.
Bill:

Here's a suggestion for Florence, which sounds economical & nice. Haven't stayed there yet; as I was unable to book in April, (no room at the inn, then!). Believe I found the name of the hotel in this forum & e-mailed "Janine", who is the sister of the proprietor. Janine & Carmel are Americans, originally from the North End in Boston, MA.

Also, although I do consult Karen Brown's books (she has 2 for Italy, one is 'Bed & Breakfasts' and other is 'Inns & Itineraries', her listing are great, but tend to be on the pricier side. My suggestion is to consult Sandra Gustafson's book "Cheap Sleeps in Italy". I booked a hotel in London using her "Cheap Sleeps in London" and was very satisfied with her suggestion.

Buon viaggio, Robin

From: [email protected] [mailto:[email protected]]
Subject: Re: does Hotel il Bargellino have website?

The Hotel il Bargellino does not have a wesite -- YET! We are hoping to get my sister hooked up soon but she must first learn how to use a computer. (ha,ha, ha...)

Anyway the Hotel is just a 5-minute walk from the train station and within 10-15 minutes of all the tourist sights in Florence.

The exact address of the hotel is Via Guelfa #87. The price is L110.000 (approx. $68) per night for a double with private bath. There is a huge beautiful terrace where you can sit out and relax between stops on the touring circuit. The hotel is clean, comfortable and convenient. There are a total of 10 rooms so I would suggest that you reserve as early as you can. You should fax any reservation request to my sister Carmel at 011-39-055-238-2698 or call at ...2658. She will then fax you back with availability, etc. and instruct you on sending a deposit.

Feel free to write again with anymore questions.
Ciao, - Janine
