Rome-Florence area-cinque terre or Amalfi Coast

I'm going to Italy in May-June for two wks and am trying to finalize where to go. I'm flying into Rome and will definitely spend 3-4 days there. I'm hoping to attend mass on Sunday at St. Peters Basilica , if I can beat the line-ups.Will I see the Pope ,I wonder.
From Rome, Florence may be next for 2-6 days.Should I do daytrips down to San Gimignano , Siena , or find a place to stay in this area? I'm considering renting a car from Rome and am interested in sightseeing/wine tasting, authentic food tasting.
From Tuscany I'm trying to decide whether to drive to Cinque Terre or the Amalfi Coast . Is there anyone who has been to both -- any preferences? I'm leaning toward A.C .

Try to avoid backtracking which wastes your vacation time.

For the Pope's schedule - www.vatican.va
The Pope gives the Sunday blessing in St. Peter's Square when he is in town.

Hi P2B - Siena and San Gim are easy day-trips from Florence by car (- or by public transport).

There are wine-tasting tours from Florence to the Chianti area if you prefer not to drive.

You're leaning right - the Amalfi Coast wins hands down IMO. Perhaps the most beautiful coastline in Europe ...

Have a look at Sea Urchin's beautiful photos:

The Amalfi Coast is an area that you can visit easily without a car if you prefer ...

Hope this helps ...

Hi P,

If you want to see the AC, it would be better to fly into or out of Naples.

You have 13 nights, 3 for Rome, 5 for Florence.

5 nights is too much for the CT, OK for the AC.

Is there a reason for skipping Venice?
