Rome Flight Connection - Going from JFK to Newark Liberty

Due to Continental's overnight rate hike (grumble) my original, simple itinerary for going from Houston to Rome has increased $700. Now, the lowest I can get is Houston to JFK, then connecting in Newark to get to Rome. If the IAH-JFK flight gets in at 330 pm, could I easily make it to Newark by 820 to make the 1020 Rome flight? I have never been to either JFK or Newark, so take that into consideration. Please help with your knowledge! Thank you!!!

How are you getting to Newark from JFK?? Are you driving, guv?? You could easily get from JFK to Newark in 30-45 minutes if you drive, taking the George Washington Bridge. (I drive to Newark and JFK all the time from my summer cottage in the Poconos. I also used to live in Manhattan for two years.)

You could almost walk there with the time you have. Seriously it's no problem.

Budman Jun 5th, 2004 05:17 PM

Yes, you could probably walk from JFK to Newark in 5 hours. Almost. ((a))

You shouldn't have a problem getting to Newark from JFK. There are shuttles, taxi's, limo's, or public transportation. It depends upon how much you want to pay for the transfer. The JFK website should have a link to ground transportation, and you could call someone to get some rates. There are definitely shuttle services that can help you out. ((b))

My thoughts exactly. ((a)) ((b))

While you guys high five yourselves, why don't we get back to the subject.

Here is all the info the OP needs:

AA, lighten up. ((a))

I told TT_TO where to go to get his information.

I was just joking with mgmargate because we posted the "you could almost walk there" thingy at the same time. ((a))

Thanks for providing the link. I may need it in the future. ((b))

Thank you all for the fast responses; I figured that was the case, by I always fear for the worst. :P
It says on the JFK website that a taxi should cost 74-78 (including a $10 surcharge and excluding tolls) and should take 75-90 minutes. Does that sound right?
There is also a shuttle called Airporter that leaves once an hour and takes 90 minutes. If I went that way and made a reservation at 5, would that leave enough time to get off the plane, claim the luggage, and make it to the shuttle (you have to be at the Ground Transportation Counter by 445)? Should I factor in possible delays and make a reservation for 6, which would get us to Newark at 730 (almost 3 hours before the flight leaves)?

Sorry for asking all the questions; I have just never had to jump through so many hoops to make a flight (I've been very lucky :) ).

All this would be happening on Tuesday July 20, if that helps.
Thanks so much! This board is soooo helpful!

TT TO,

I just re-read your first post. Your flight is not till 10:20? You could take any shuttle you want, and I agree with the above, you could walk there....

mgmargate Jun 5th, 2004 06:29 PM

TT TO: you could probably make the 5:00 but if there is a penalty if you miss it why not book the 6:00.

I also think you are better of taking the 6 pm as there will be a bit less traffic at that time than departing at 5 pm which is the midst of weekday rush hour. You also won't feel so rushed trying to collect all your bags and find the bus at JFK, etc, esp as you have a big group.

There are many restaurants in Newark airport esp in Terminal C which is Continental. There is also a nice Marriott at the airport if you want to go for a real dinner.

I would try very hard to get boarding passes for both legs when you check in for the Houston - JFK leg. That way you should only have to re-check your luggage when you arrive at Newark.

Here's a link to a shuttle service a friend used a couple of years ago. The fare is $26 per person between the airports. It took her an hour to go between the airports.

What a wonderful, useful link, AAfrequentflyer! But, if you took a taxi from JFK to Newark, via the Whitestone Bridge to GW Bridge to NJ Turnpike, even with traffic, it should not take 90 minutes. It doesn't even take me 90 minutes to drive from Delaware Water Gap to Newark.

Thanks for all the helpful responses!

Fortunately, Continental's fares went "back to normal" on Sunday and I was able to concern a direct flight (with one stop in Newark) from Houston to Rome.
But, at least if I ever run into this problem in the future, I know it can be handled. Thanks again. :)

I was able to *secure* a direct flight...must preview before posting. :)
