Rome FCO Sufficient Time??
 

I will be arriving United Airlines at 7:45AM.

NO checked bags and have an Alitalia flight at 10:00AM separate ticket. Do you think I have enough time to clear customs , and check in for my next flight? I think I go from terminal 3 to terminal 1,
Can anyone please explain what I need to do once I get off the United Flight.

Well, first you need to go through Immigration (entry of people, not luggage). How long this takes will depend on how many international flights land at once. Then, since you have no checked luggage you need to head to the terminal for your next flight.

If this will be enough time - since this is 2 separate tickets - depends on

What airline is the second flight and what are their rules for checking in (can you check in online in advance)? Or do you have to turn up at a very specific time - far in advance (as with many budget airlines)?

For some they want you to actually check in at about the same time you are landing from the first flight

And since these are different tickets you have no protection if your incoming flight is late for some reason - and you wold have to buy a new ticket at the walk up price.

I think that the two terminals are in the same building at FCO and providing that your incoming flight is about on time you should be fine for the connection.

Terminal 3 is not in the same building as Terminal 1, but there's an internal passageway which allows you to stay behind security. If you can get a boarding card (online) before you leave home, you can follow the itinerary for transit passengers, which will save you a lot of time. Even if you can't get a boarding card, bring along a printout of your itinerary and go straight to the boarding gate, explaining at immigration, if they ask, that you weren't able to get a boarding card. You can get a boarding card at the gate.

There is usually a security check specifically for transit passengers coming from outside the Schengen area, but this is just for your flight, and only for the transit passengers, and it normally doesn't take long.

You won't see any signs for Terminal 1 if your follow the transit passenger itinerary. Just follow the signs for your gate boarding area, usually A or B in Terminal 1.

The biggest risk is that your first flight will arrive late. Since you have two separate itineraries, your second ticket will be worthless if you miss the connection. What is the destination of the second flight?
