Rome experts help required
I am travelling to Rome next week for a soccer match & wondered if any of you rome regulars know of a good place to stay in easy reach of the olympic stadium & also the city centre.
Any comments on distance between the two & distance from the airport would be much appreciated.

best regards

mark
parishuttle
This is a question that could be answered so much more easily if it were possible to include a picture/image (map) with the answer. The website www.travel-board.com permits that. So I have taken the liberty of posting this answer along with a snippet of a map there.

You can see it at http://www.travel-board.com/index.php?board=2;action=display;threadid=427
< BR>Defining the city "centre" is a bit subjective. Let's say that it's somewhere in the general vicinty of Piazza Venezia. It's only 6.4 km from there to Stadio Olimpico, according to www.mappy.com, as opposed to 31 km to the airport in Fiumicino. the stadium is roughly straight north of the Vatican, or NNW from Piazza Venezia.

The Olympic stadium would be just off the map about at 11 o'clock on the map at the URL cited above. The Vatican is easily identified at about 8 o'clock. Piazza Venezia qwould be at about 6 o'clock. The big green area in the center is Villa Borghese and its surrounding park lands.

So, depending on where, exactly you want to be near, as far as the city "centre", I think that many hotels in the Centro Storico, or especially on the north, towards the Tiber in the vague general direction of the Vatican would work.

I am guessing that you are not thinking of using a private car to go from hotel to stadium or to/from attractions in central Rome. It's going to be best to use taxi or other public transport wherever you stay.

So, I think that most of the "usual" hotels in the typical tourist concentration (Pantheon/Navona/Spagna/Borghese) will be good choices, and that location might not necessarily be the critical factor to choose one over another.

Best wishes,

Rex
many thanks Rex.

One more question & it feels particularly strange for me of all people to be asking this but the best way from the airport into town would be ?

best regards

mark
parishuttle
LOL! You're very welcome, mark

A shuttle, of course! Actually, there are a number of threads on arranged drivers. I'll see if I can locate some for you.

Taxi is not prohibitively expensive, but as with Paris, hardly the best choice for a solo traveler.

There is good and inexpensive train service from Fiumicino to Termini, and then taxis are quite affordable to any of the principal hotel areas in the center of Rome.
Here are a few:

http://www.limoservicerome.com/

http://www.rome-airport-shuttle.com/

http://www.rome-shuttle.com/

http://www.airportshuttle.it/

The first came from doing a search here using the Boolean functions

rome and (limo or shuttle or limousine)

I mention this because many people don't realize that these Boolean functions work for searching here.

and the next three popped up, right to the top from a Yahoo! search of Rome airport shuttle.

Sometimes it is easy to find stuff like this, and sometimes not.
thanks again

I will try the shuttle just to compare services I think ( may learn something who knows ).

Hello Mark,

The Vatican/Ottaviano area might be a good compromise as there's a bus to the stadium from there, I believe. (I can check this for you ...)
How are you getting to the stadium?

FCO-Rome costs about:-
EURO 40-45.00 by limo,
EURO 8.80 by train to Termini.
EURO 4.70 by train to other stations, e.g Trastevere

Forza Roma!
(Hey - you're not a laziale, are you?)

Steve
