Rome driving

Am I better off taking a train out of Rome and then renting a car, or rent in Rome and take my chances with Italian drivers?
I will be leaving for the Umbria region.
My first trip to italy, so you may hear from me again.
Thanks

You can rent at the airport and then get right on the autostrada, there is a little fee for that though. Or go to Orvieto on the train and rent from there.

Sounds like you will have a car for your trip so you may as well get used to the driving. Picking up a car right in Rome may be a challenge depending on the time of day.

I would take the airport train to the termini Rome then enjoy the train to your destination in Umbria. Rent in that town, Perugia, Orvieto, etc. Specify a drop off town, then train back to Rome. In addition avoiding the hassle of driving in Rome you will save the additional tax that the airport locations tack on to your bill. See the posts on AutoEurope, they can offer rentals in almost all cities and towns in Italy. I don't work for AutoEurope....but use them on every trip, have not been disappointed yet.

We picked up our car at the airport and headed to Umbria and had no problems at all. As SeaUrchin mentioned, you will be on the autostrada so you won't have to do any Rome city driving. Super easy.

Hi D,

See if you can pickup in Orvieto. 1 hr by train from Rome.

See the town before collecting the car.
