Rome dinner on Christmas Eve
My sister thinks we need a hotel with a restaurant for Christmas eve. I read on this forum that restaurants in the Jewish ghetto are open. Looking for a hotel with a restaurant is fairly limiting and I don't think we need to.
I have booked the Hotel delle Nazioni just in case, but it's not all that highly ranked on TA, although the reviews are good. It is well located. But not cheap at 165 Euros per room. Will dinner in Rome on December 24 be a problem? |
Ah yea.........even on the lower Catholic holidays there are quite a few places that are closed-cannot even imagine in Rome?

Anyone with any suggestions. I am also interested for Christmas Eve and or Christmas day restaurant suggestions in Rome.

I was in Rome two years ago on Christmas eve. I can't vouch for the restaurants in the Ghetto. I can say that there were many places closed on Christmas eve but more places were open on Christmas - Christmas Eve may pose more of a challenge. I stayed with my friend who lives behind the Pantheon. We ended up going out to dinner on Christmas Eve to a lovely Chinese Restaurant to the right of the Pantheon (if you are facing the building)...so, yes, Jewish owned restaurants in the Ghetto may be open or you can do what many Jewish people do in the USA - go out for Chinese food on Christmas (Eve). There are also a few Indian Restaurants in an area off of Via Nazionale (I think on Via Serpenti).

Thanks for the report risab. Anyone else with personal experience?

We are also in Rome on Christmas Eve & Christmas Day and wondering where to eat. So far someone has suggested “Il Caminetto” at Viale Parioli 89 ph 39 06 80 83 946 (altho. don't know if it's open). I also came across a suggestion for someone last year being southern Italian restaurant "Al 34" at 34 Via Mario de'Fiori ph 39 06 67 95 091 and on Christmas Eve, seafood specialist "Porto di Ripetta" (250 Via di Ripetta, ph 39 06 36 12 376). We are particularly looking for a Christmas lunch designed for families. Any suggestions welcome!

We solved the problem by changing our dates. But before doing that, we'd booked at The Lancelot Hotel, very popular, which serves a traditional all-fish dinner on Christmas Eve and big dinner on Christmas Day. For a price. The cook accomodates vegetarians, too.

If Porto di Ripetta is open, I suggest eating there. It is a fabulous restaurant, a bit high end. Totally off any tourist track. You'll hardly find reference to it on any English language websites, or in any books. Great, great food, and very good service in an understated. lovely atmosphere.
I haven't eaten at Al 34 but a friend of mine loves it. |
