Rome: Colosseum Underground Tours a Smash Hit...
according to a blurb in my local fish warp the other day, which in part said:
"Tickets for the undwerground, where tourists can see cages for tigers and lions and where gladiators once prepared for fights, have been selling out since opening Tuesday".
and the artcile also says that "the colosseums' upper tier, closed since the 1970s, has also been reopened"
"the areas are accessible only by guided tours with a maximum of 25 people and which go off about every 20 minutes.
"some 4.5 million visitors have toured the Colosseum between Jan 1 and the end of September."
So if planning to explore the newly opened underground preceints arrive early or, if possible ????, book ahead.

<How did you schedule your tour?>
Someone here (I think) had posted this link, which provided pretty good instructions.

I called a few days ago, and was given a choice of a few times for English tours on Sunday the 7th. I called this number and, even though I've been taking Italian lessons, whimped out and was able to reserve in English: +39 06 39967700
Now I need to rent Gladiator!

Thanks for the info - I think you should be able to rent a gladiator out front before going in - the ubiquitous guys dressed up like gladiators to pose with tourists for photos - charging of course - I always thought this schlocky kitsch being allowed to go on right in front of the Colosseum was so so tacky - can't believe that this and a plethora of other folks selling tacky souvenirs was tolerated and to me this detracted greatly from the solemnity of the Colosseum. Perhaps they have been given the boot?

We will be visiting in mid-March with a herd of 41 students and 7 adults. Does anyone know when a decision will be made about re-opening after the cold season? Also, for those of you who have actually done this tour - how long does it take to do the pits and the third tier? 20 min? 30 min? more? Thanks
