I've posted this before about the Palatine & colosseum issue, but here goes. IMO it is well worth it to purchase the combined ticket for the Palatine and the C'seum at the Palatine, even if you aren't going round the Palatine, as the difference is only about E2 each.
If you enter the Forum from the oppposite end to the P'tine hill, armed with your guide book, you can work your way around the ruins fairly well, though this was the one sight in Rome where I felt a guide would have been a positive advantage. Follow the signs to the Palatine, and buy your combined ticket. I recommend touring the Palatine - there are pleasant gardens, further ruins, and a very good museum. Then take the back exit down the hill towards the back of the C'seum. Armed with your ticket, you will see that there are two [security] queues. Ignore the long one on the right and go confidently through the security gate on the left. Keep walking, ignoring the next queue - that is the ticket queue proper. Eventually, after you feel you've already walked half way round, you will reach the entrance, and brandish your tickets again. I felt that the C'seum was pretty easy to understand and that a guide was unnecessary, but a good guide book is useful. all of this will take you a good half day, depending on how long you linger in the forum and Palatine. Good luck! |
