Rome City Tax

We are booked to stay in a Rome hotel in May 2011. Recently, we received an email from the hotel informing us that starting January 1, 2011 a city tax of 2€ per person, daily will come into effect. This tax will be added and paid by cash at the time of check-out.

Does anybody know more about this tax?

That's about it, except the tax is higher for 4- and 5-star hotels. Here's the Roma tourism website's info:

Is this only for hotels, that is how it looks on the huffingtonpost.com article, but the other one mentions residences. We are staying in an apartment in April.

The Rome city tax sounds very much like the tourist/ visitor's tax collected by hotels/B&B's in France.

It looks like Rome city museums & transportation (sightseeing buses, etc.) will also be collecting this tax.

I was surprised that the tax must be paid separately in cash @ the hotel!

I guess it's just the cost of staying & touring the fabulous sights in Rome!

That's a weird tax given it only is levied if you stay more than 10 days.

Where did you read that it must be paid in cash separately at the hotel? I don't see that anywhere, that would be very strange as a way of collecting taxes from businesses.

It's not levied only if you stay more than 10 days. It's levied each day for UP TO 10 days.

It's the exact equivalent of the taxe de séjour in France. When I rented my home there I had to collect if from renters. I have no clue why it has to be collected separately and in cash, though.

Christina & StCirq: We were informed in the email from the hotel that "<i>the tax will be added and paid CASH on the spot on check-out</i>". It does seem strange that it is collected in this way.

Sure does. I have a mental image of hotel owners with wheelbarrows full of euro coins heading through the streets to the mayor's office.

Well, it has to be collected separately from a credit-card charge for the room if it has to be paid in cash, and it has to be paid in cash because the hotel doesn't want to collect 1.96 or 1.94 Euro (2 Euro less the merchant's fee) and then turn around and pay the city the full 2 Euro. For all I know, the city regulations also require that it be paid in cash; you may even get some kind of separate receipt for it.

It's disagreeable, and I don't think the city is doing the right thing, but I also don't think it's worth getting into a lather about it.
